New style USB connected flash drives... Female USB port?

Featured Replies

Want to buy a decent, faster flash drive for my notebook. I have a USB port but not a mini USB type C. Specifically looking at a Sandisk Ultra luxe 256 gb... Have them in USB and dual with both USB and mini USB. It has a male plug in USB-C connector but the standard USB connector looks like its a female and you would need an adaptet to plug it into a standard USB computer port. Is this a new thing or am I seeing things?

I'd bet that if you slid the little thingy on top, you'd see that both the USB-A and USB-C are male. But only one male fitting is visible at a time. The other side just looks like it's female until you slide the switch the other way.

That's the way mine are configured, anyway. They're real handy for copying files from a PC and putting them on a phone. Or vice-versa.

Edit: I'd add that I also have some (older) dual USB-A to USB-Micro adapters, so be careful if you want USB-C and not USB-Micro.

Im pretty sure its a female USB connector. Ive had push pull ones as you describe. I went through a lot of video reviews on it and they only demonstrate it with the mini USB

Most of my hard drive cords are 3.0 to type C, and they're very fast.

I noticed that new external SSDs are offering a choice of a USB-A cable for computers or a USB-C cable for smartphones (and some newer laptops like my ASUS that has a USB-C port). One more thing to pay attention to when you go shopping for tech goodies.

I don't know if a smartphone can power an old timey disk type drive.

I use a Scandisc 512 convertable type C or flip it to standard usb

Just an alternative thought... I store all my files in the cloud these days (Google Drive). That way, there is no risk of loss from local hardware failure. Could this suit you too?
