Hegseth Purges Navy Promotion List As Pentagon DEI Crackdown Deepens

Defense Secretary Blocks Several Future Admirals

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has blocked the promotion of several senior Navy officers who had already been selected to become one-star admirals, according to multiple reports.

The move marks the latest intervention by Hegseth in the military promotion process and follows a similar action involving Army officers earlier this year.

While defense secretaries have the authority to alter promotion lists, such interventions are relatively uncommon and have sparked fresh debate over the administration’s efforts to reshape the armed forces.

DEI Links Reportedly Behind Some Removals

According to sources familiar with the decision, the officers removed from the promotion list included men and women from a variety of backgrounds.

Some were reportedly targeted because of their involvement in military Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, a central focus of the Trump administration’s campaign to eliminate what it describes as “woke” policies from the armed forces.

The official Navy promotion list was released by the Pentagon on May 22, but several names approved by Navy promotion boards were reportedly removed before final publication.

Promotion Push For Hegseth Aide Raises Questions

The controversy has been intensified by reports that Hegseth also sought to advance the career of one of his closest military aides.

According to reports, Navy SEAL Captain William Francis Jr., who serves as Hegseth’s assistant, was discussed as a possible promotion candidate.

However, sources say Francis did not meet several traditional requirements normally expected of officers being considered for promotion to flag rank, including command experience at a major level.

Meritocracy Or Political Purge?

The Pentagon insists the decisions are based solely on merit.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said military promotions would no longer consider factors such as race or gender.

“Under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, meritocracy reigns supreme,” he said.

Critics, however, argue the administration is selectively targeting officers associated with diversity programmes while reshaping the senior military leadership along ideological lines.

Military Leadership Shake-Up Accelerates

Since taking office, Hegseth has overseen one of the most dramatic leadership shake-ups in recent Pentagon history.

According to reports, 19 generals and flag officers have either been dismissed, sidelined or removed from key positions during his tenure.

Many of those affected have been women or members of minority groups, fueling accusations that the administration's anti-DEI campaign is having a disproportionate impact on certain officers.

Army Officers Also Removed

The Navy decision follows a similar intervention involving promotions to brigadier general in the Army.

In that case, four colonels were reportedly removed from a promotion list after it had already been approved through the normal military process.

Those officers included two women and two African Americans.

The latest moves suggest the Pentagon's campaign to reshape military leadership is far from over, with promotion boards increasingly becoming another front in the administration’s wider battle against diversity programmes inside the armed forces.
