There are a few orange orchards in Fang, Thaton area and they are delicious & sweet. I'm sure you can purchase their oranges but why do you want to buy an orange tree? :o

A few is an under statement, we should rename Fang to Orange County. Yes they taste good and at 25 odd baht a sappling why import? Not sure I would be wanting to plant Citrus anymore though, the weather is starting to disrupt the yield, my wife and I are looking at alternatives as our farms will soon be running in the red, which is shocking as only two years ago they were running firmly within the black, last year was a waste of time, this year is looking no better.

We've got our first house (or base / retirement house) there (Mae Ai) for the past 19 years. To tell you the truth, I'm kind of put off by the som sy nam pueng as well as visiting or overseeing the farms and platations due to the smell of insecticide in the air... We have a fairly large orchard in front of the house (approx. 40 m to the closest trees) and when they spray the insecticide, it's just about unbearable. Mind you, we had them put up a wind sock on a 12 m pole to warn them / help them when it's time to spray. There's some of my rantings on the Bangkok Post forum as well as letters to various newspapers and the EPA folks at the provincial / country level.

Toonarmygeorge and nutshell,

Yes, you can buy orange saplings in Thailand. Fang, Chai Prakan, and Mae Ai (probably) have the most concentrated area of orange groves in the country. Log onto the MOAC (Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives) and have a browse. My family and myself don't get up that way the our rubber and teak plantations too often, but I suspect that with the fall of the price of oranges the price of saplings may have dropped as well albeit more difficult to find. I recall my neighbor saying one sapling costs around 25 baht 8 years ago...
