Iran Ceasefire On The Brink Following AH 64 Shootdown

AH 64.jpg

A fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran appeared close to collapse on Tuesday after US forces launched retaliatory strikes near the Strait of Hormuz following the reported downing of an American military helicopter.

The strikes, ordered after President Donald Trump accused Iran of shooting down a US aircraft on patrol over the strategic waterway, mark the most serious escalation in weeks and raise fears the region could slide back into full-scale conflict.

Iran Reports Water Facilities Hit

Iranian state media claimed two water reservoirs in the Bemani district near the Strait of Hormuz were among the sites struck during the operation.

Explosions were also reported on Qeshm Island, which sits astride one of the world's most important shipping lanes.

The reports could prove highly controversial if confirmed, as attacks on infrastructure linked to civilian services are likely to draw international scrutiny.

Trump Orders Response

US Central Command described the operation as a "proportional response" to what it called unjustified Iranian aggression.

Earlier, Trump said Iran had brought down an American helicopter operating near the Strait and warned that the United States "must, of necessity, respond."

Tehran Threatens Retaliation

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran would not allow the latest attack to go unanswered.

"Iranian military forces will leave no attack or threat unanswered," he declared, while warning foreign military forces operating near Iran's borders remained at risk.

Strait Of Hormuz Back In Focus

The latest exchange places renewed attention on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a huge share of global energy supplies move.

With Iran already exerting pressure on shipping routes and both sides exchanging strikes despite ceasefire talks, fears are growing that the conflict could once again threaten regional stability and global oil markets.

Attacks on a water reservoir would be a war crime if intentional.

As should the islamist elite diverting rivers so they could grow cotton. Which is mainly why Iran has an acute water shortage.
