Cambodia and Thailand clashed at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, exchanging sharply opposing accounts of their border dispute and the humanitarian fallout. Cambodia’s ambassador Ke Sovann accused Thai forces of unlawfully occupying Cambodian territory, citing destroyed homes, schools and livelihoods, with more than 20,000 civilians still displaced despite a ceasefire signed in December 2025. He warned that peace required more than silence on the battlefield, stressing the need for safe civilian return. Thailand’s envoy Usana Berananda rejected the claims, insisting Bangkok sought no foreign territory and accusing Phnom Penh of spreading disinformation. Temporary barriers and barbed wire, she said, were precautionary measures to prevent further clashes. The exchange coincided with a report by UN Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews, who visited Cambodian displacement sites and urged both sides to uphold international law. Thailand dismissed his findings as one‑sided, while Cambodian researchers accused Bangkok of systematic forced evictions. Tensions were further inflamed when Thai officials led ASEAN observers and media to compounds in O’Smach, an area Cambodia says is illegally occupied. Thailand presented the buildings as hubs for cyber‑fraud, but Phnom Penh denounced the tour as an attempt to legitimise occupation. Regional analysts warn that unless military actions match diplomatic assurances, the fragile ceasefire could unravel. Both governments nonetheless reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful resolution under the UN Charter, though trust remains elusive.
