Iran has claimed the Strait of Hormuz is closed and there has been “zero passage” through it.

The statement on Monday, local time, appears to be in direct contradiction to information that suggested ssveerasl ships has indeed sailed through the Strait on Monday.

Iran state media said the Strait will be “closed until further notice”.

To be fair, the deal reached between the US and Iran is not due to be signed until Friday. So Iran may well want to say it is close until then.

UNCLOS allows states to levy fees. Tolls on the Straits will not be imposed but maritime fees will be. Neither the United States nor Iran have ratified UNCLOS.

The waters of the Straits of Hormuz lie in Iranian and Omani territorial waters. None of it is in international waters.

Payment of a maritime fee is not incompatible with innocent passage.
