June 18Jun 18 Cambodia is celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, a figure whose life has mirrored the nation’s journey through independence, war and reconciliation.Born Paule‑Monique Izzi in Saigon in 1936, she met King Father Norodom Sihanouk after winning a beauty contest in 1951. Their marriage in 1955 marked the beginning of one of Asia’s most enduring royal partnerships. Together, they witnessed Cambodia’s independence from France, the turmoil of the Khmer Rouge era and the eventual restoration of the monarchy.Throughout decades of upheaval, Queen Mother Monineath remained a steadfast presence. She served as president of the Cambodian Red Cross in the late 1960s, endured years of house arrest under the Khmer Rouge, and lived in exile before returning to Phnom Penh in 1991 to a hero’s welcome. Her role has extended beyond ceremonial duties. She has been credited with supporting peace efforts and strengthening Cambodia’s diplomatic ties, particularly with China. Kin Phea of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia described her as “a symbol of the long‑standing traditional friendship between Cambodia and China.”Ambassador Youk Chhang noted that her biography is inseparable from Cambodia’s modern history, calling her “a living record of the nation’s triumphs and tragedies.” He highlighted her influence as a role model for women and girls, and her quiet but significant contributions to diplomacy.Since King Father Sihanouk’s death in 2012, Queen Mother Monineath has continued to appear alongside her son, King Norodom Sihamoni, at national events. For many Cambodians, she embodies continuity between past and present, resilience through hardship and the enduring hope of a better future.-2026-06-18 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
