7.5 Magnitude Twin Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela As Buildings Collapse In Caracas

Capital City Suffers Major Damage

Venezuela has been struck by two powerful earthquakes within seconds of each other, causing widespread destruction, collapsing buildings and prompting fears of a major loss of life.

The first quake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck near the northern coast shortly after 6pm local time. Just 40 seconds later, a second and stronger 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the same region.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed fatalities and declared a national state of emergency as rescue efforts intensified.

Survivor Says Quake Was Worse Than 1967 Disaster

Caracas resident Manuel Guevara Baro, who survived the city's deadly 1967 earthquake, said Wednesday's disaster was unlike anything he had ever experienced.

"I've never seen anything like it," he said.

Baro described buildings swaying violently, water pouring through damaged structures and terrified residents desperately trying to escape.

"It was truly horrible, terrifying," he added.

Residents Describe Scenes Of Panic

Another survivor, Amparo Díaz, said she heard what sounded like "a roar coming from the ground" before her apartment building began shaking.

"The kitchen collapsed. The living room wall is about to fall," she said.

Díaz escaped with only her phone and a rosary, saying she now fears her home could collapse entirely.

Many residents are planning to spend the night outdoors amid fears of aftershocks.

Rescue Teams Race Against Time

Hundreds of emergency workers have been deployed across affected regions.

Search-and-rescue crews are combing through rubble looking for survivors trapped inside collapsed buildings.

Authorities have not yet released an official death toll, raising concerns that casualty numbers could rise significantly in the coming hours.

United States Sends Emergency Assistance

The United States has announced it will send search-and-rescue teams, medical supplies and humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

US officials said emergency support is already being coordinated with authorities on the ground.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau pledged American support, saying Washington stands with the Venezuelan people during the crisis.

Maduro Issues Message From Prison

Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, currently imprisoned in New York on drug trafficking and weapons charges, released a statement expressing solidarity with victims.

In a message published on Telegram, Maduro urged Venezuelans to show "maximum unity, maximum solidarity and maximum action" as the country confronts the disaster.

Experts Warn Of Further Danger

Seismologists say the immediate threat extends beyond the earthquakes themselves.

Collapsed structures, damaged gas lines, electrical fires and broken water systems can often cause additional casualties after major seismic events.

Experts warn that the coming days could prove critical for rescue efforts.

Tsunami Warning Cancelled

Initial tsunami advisories issued for parts of the Caribbean were later cancelled.

The US Tsunami Warning Centers confirmed there is currently no tsunami threat following the earthquakes.

Rescue operations are expected to continue throughout the night as officials assess the full scale of the catastrophe.

Pulled up some videos from around the world. Even RT in Russia... This is tragic.

I hope the USA pulls out all the stops to send all the aid we are capable of. And the EU and others send their best.

In Hawaii, I experienced a 7.5 quake where the coast line at the epicenter subsided 12 feet, drowning two campers. I lived about 40 miles away and thought my two-story house would collapse. Fortunately the house only suffered some cracks in the foundation. Hope to never experience that again.
