Russia Bombs Kyiv Humanitarian Warehouse, Reduced To Rubble

A major Russian missile and drone assault has destroyed a key humanitarian warehouse operated by the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in Kyiv, wiping out hundreds of thousands of emergency relief supplies intended for civilians caught up in the war.

According to the Red Cross, around 320,000 humanitarian aid items worth more than $1.76 million were destroyed when the warehouse was hit during an overnight bombardment that also killed at least 21 civilians and injured dozens more across the Ukrainian capital.

The facility served as one of the Ukrainian Red Cross's principal logistics centres, distributing emergency supplies nationwide to communities affected by Russia's full-scale invasion.

Essential Aid Lost In Strike

Among the destroyed supplies were generators, heat pumps and vital medical equipment including stretchers, defibrillators, ultrasound machines and patient monitoring devices.

The warehouse also contained emergency relief kits designed for rapid deployment following missile strikes, fires and evacuations. Blankets, bedding, hygiene kits, tarpaulins, plastic sheeting and sleeping equipment intended for families left homeless by attacks were all lost in the explosion.

Many of the supplies had been provided through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism to strengthen Ukraine's emergency response capability.

A cargo vehicle used to transport aid across the country was also damaged in the strike.

Eleven Hours Of Bombardment

The warehouse was destroyed during an intense Russian attack that lasted for approximately 11 hours, with waves of drones and missiles striking targets across Kyiv through Thursday morning.

Explosions echoed across the city as more than 50,000 residents sought shelter inside underground metro stations following repeated air raid warnings.

Officials said more than 30 locations across the capital suffered damage, including around 20 residential buildings. Several apartment blocks partially collapsed, trapping residents beneath the rubble while emergency crews searched for survivors throughout the day.

In the Desnianskyi district, rescue teams worked to free people trapped inside a damaged nine-storey building, while another residential block in the Darnytskyi district suffered major structural collapse.

Russia Claims Retaliation

Russia said the large-scale assault was carried out in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities.

Since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Moscow has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian cities with long-range missile and drone strikes, saying attacks are aimed at degrading Ukraine's military capabilities and infrastructure.

The United Nations estimates that more than 16,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since the invasion began, although the true figure is believed to be considerably higher.

Red Cross Warns Of Humanitarian Setback

The Ukrainian Red Cross described the destruction of the warehouse as a severe blow to humanitarian operations across the country.

The organisation said the facility played a critical role in ensuring aid reached civilians affected by shelling, displacement and ongoing fighting, warning that the loss would significantly hamper relief efforts at a time when humanitarian needs remain immense.

Meanwhile, Andrii Sybiha described the bombardment as a "night of horror" for Kyiv, where residents endured hours of explosions as air defences attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones.

The latest assault underlines the continuing intensity of the conflict, with humanitarian agencies warning that repeated strikes on civilian infrastructure are making it increasingly difficult to deliver life-saving assistance to those most affected by the war.
