Has Thailand lost its spark?

Featured Replies

When was the last time you saw something in Thailand that genuinely made you stop and think, “Yeah, oh wow”?

This isn’t meant as a piss take, but when was the last time you saw something that genuinely excited you, impressed you, or caught you completely by surprise? And no, I don’t mean the last time you sat down on the bog or anything you saw down on Soi 6.

For me, it feels like those moments were far more common decades ago. Back then, Thailand seemed full of little surprises and unexpected experiences. You could turn a corner and stumble across something that made you smile or left you talking about it for days.

These days, Thailand feels much more ordinary.

In many ways, life is also much easier than it used to be. Online shopping is great, there are far more services available, mobile banking works, transport in Bangkok is better, and the internet is miles ahead of what it once was.

But I don’t think that’s why most of us came here in the first place. People didn’t uproot their lives because of the Skytrain or fast WiFi. They came because there was something about Thailand that fascinated them. It felt different, unpredictable, colourful, gritty at times, and culturally unique.

I’m not saying Thailand has become a bad spot. I definitely still think it’s a good place to live.

I just wonder whether it has lost a little of the cultural and social flair that made it feel so special years ago. Maybe, as we age, we’ve changed as much as Thailand has. Maybe familiarity has replaced curiosity.

Or maybe there are still plenty of those “wow” moments out there, and I’ve simply stopped noticing them.

And then, just as I was about to post this topic, I saw this which made me pause…

Thailand is about relaxing not wow.

My life in Thailand is not about that, I enjoy the simple things, the smile, hospitality, pleasantness.

Everytime I look at the west, genuinely makes me stop and think, then I want to vomit.

Yeah, nothing says “lost its magic” like being able to order pad Thai at 2:13am from your sofa while a man in a chicken costume delivers it on a scooter with disco lights under it.

Honestly though, the “wow” moments are still there… you’ve just upgraded from tourist surprise mode to local: seen-it-all buffering.

Give it a week and you’ll see something that resets the whole argument again — usually involving traffic, a monk on an iPhone, or a dog that clearly owns the soi.

If you are looking for wow you need to do new things, different countries

Yes. Because too many Farangs want high standard Northern European IKEA .modern style hotels and restaurants, so everything here starts to look the same as the stuff back home, why leave eh?

And now for something completely different...

I recommend you go to Rajasthan in the Northwest of India and visit the nomadic desert gypsies and learn how to dance. They have almost nothing and are happy.

You can get your whole family to play along with you and perform for tourists at hotels. 👍

Everyday this past week. Another day, another memory. Get in the car, on the motorbike ... and EXPLORE.
