Actually the homicide rate rose for several years and peaked around 2002/03ish before later falling.

Today the UK still has murders, but they are just committed mostly with knives, sharp instruments, blunt force, etc.

The U.S. also has a very different set of problems than the UK. We have gangs, drug trafficking, millions more people, a huge number of illegal guns already on the streets and a Constitution that protects the right to own firearms.

I think it's way too simple to say guns are the only problem. If that were true, every place with strict gun laws would be crime free and they're not.

We need to go after violent criminals, gangs, repeat offenders and illegal guns. Taking guns away from law abiding people isn't going to magically fix everything.

Repealing the Second Amendment might cause an uptick in gun violence for a few years as in the UK.

The real trouble is that guns in the US seem to be genetic! It might not “fix everything” but it would sure be a good start. Gun violence sentence should be doubled.

My guess is that most of the MAGA types here want Robinson executed whether he's guilty or not. There a whole lot of hanky-panky about this case that simply don't fit. Start with the crime scene being completely "cleaned" and literally paved over within 48 hours of the murder and work from there. That alone should get the case tossed out.

The hypocrisy of the right - the self anointed side of law and order - trying to quickly end a court case and execute someone without due process. Whatever the reason, a case ends when it ends, with a guilty charge beyond reasonable doubt.

Also, it has been proven time after time that it's the right that is by far most frequently responsible for extremist violence.

I don't mean that Robinson is a right wing extremist, just that some posters are twisting facts to suit their ideology.

CON: It further delays the inevitable. Stretching out the legal process and dragging these hearings out over months only prolongs the agony for Kirk's family and stalls the decisive justice this cold blooded act demands.

PRO: It provides lasting political ammunition/political fodder. By forcing this timeline forward, the violent reality of radical leftwing extremism stays front and center on the public stage.

That’s a pretty broad brush. “The international left” isn’t a monolith, and neither are “progressive forum posters.” Some people do overreact to language. Some don’t. Some focus on policy, some on tone.

If your point is that we should keep focus on the severity of the crime, I agree. But saying anyone offended by harsh language is pro-violence or part of an “assassination cult” isn’t supported by what’s actually in this thread. I don't see any specific posts where someone excused the crime?
