From someone else another thread:
"After living in Thailand for 21 years I have truly and succinctly learned the meaning of corruption. The dictionaries of the world cannot begin to extrapolate the definition when examining Thai society. It's like a festering cancer passed on from birth that is metastatic in nature consuming every cell in a Thai's body."

They're a corrupt people and, to be fair that's probably a big part of the attraction for many long stayers.

Gotta take the rough with the smooth since, with white skin, you/we're widely seen as an easy mark

Misery loves company. At a guess, I'd say most post about TH, are negative, as haters hate, it's what they live for.

Would it surprise you to know, there's a corruption index, and every country is on it. Just accept that it exists, and move on with life.

As a guest,I know and accept TH as it is, and TBH, wouldn't have it any other way. OK, a few things, but not my country, or my concern. I'm just a visitor and will be gone soon enough.

If you only come here in January, then the 2 tier pricing doesn't even affect you. White skin has nothing to do with it, as all foreigners are subject to 2 tier pricing, and most are not white skinned.

I have found out that FV in HCMC gives a 20% discount to uninsured people. Of course I found this preposterous, it really is, but I might use it by paying myself and claim from my insurance.

And how does that save you, if the insurance are paying anyway...?

I lived there in the 90s early 2ks - there hasn't been any progress but, as u say, it is what it is:

won't change anytime soon without enough shaming.

There's no harm in callimg out <deleted>ty behaviour though - they DO understand that it's scummy and, with enough pushback and shaming, it slowly changes. They may gain some extra baht but people should make them compensate by loss of face.
Treating (esp. white) people differently based on the colour of their skin is low class and bummy.

It's out of order so people should call it what it is - pay the extra but give them loss of face - make them feel it - it's fair enough.

If you haven't lived here for over 20 yrs, then you probably haven't seen the progress made countrywide. Explains a lot, and most negative comments come from the same ignorance.

Reading comprehension again ... has nothing to do with white people.

Thai for Thais, accept it. Many wish their country was the same, as you surely do with your comments about scammy Thais in UK. Not much different from the scammy Brits, I would think. Scamming is color blind,

Of course they charge foreigners more and just cheat foreigners openly. Nothing new here. So no point to come to get medical care in Thailand if it's going to cost almost same as back in the west.

Agreed. Many HIAs in Thailand.

Why would people want to trust 3rd world dOcToRs anyway?
I guess the problem is when there's no alternative - eg. i emergencies.

Had a couple of dentists trying to cheat me formoney. One even lied to me and tiold me I needed NINE fillings.
Told them to just clean and went home (to the UK) where a proper dentist (from a high trust culture with morals / scruples) told me no fillings needed.

3rd World Countries are tht way PRIMARILY becaiuse of 3rd World Cultures.
Corruption, lying, cheating etc. is why they never develop.

Everyone trying to fk over everyone else.

People need to call out Thais for what they are when they behave this way.

Sure, they hate losing face but need to learn that no respect is due on the basis of greed - even when dressed in a white coat.

So MAKE them 'lose face' where appropriate - they're just vonmen and women with a certificate and a costume.

Call em out for what they are.

And yet, I've had excellent, affordable care here, over the past 20 years. Using both govt & private facilities.

Choose wisely, like anywhere in the world.

Same as USA, with limited care needed there, but also has it's share of quacks.

I never understood medical tourism, as seems high risk, along with expense of flights & hotels. In Thailand you'd be using private hospitals anyway, not inexpensive govt hospitals, unless staying for quite some time, as Qs for most things are very long.

You'd have to come from a really crap healthcare country, if TH was considered a better option.

Other 3rd world countries + the US (insane costs) are the only places that might make sense.

After my experience with the dentist and hearing other horror stories it's best not to risk medical treatment there if u can avoid it.

Many Thais would happily chop you up (esp as a falang) if it meant making a few more thousand baht for themselves.

Sad but true.

Sheesh--always ask first! No idea about private hospitals but Navy Hosp no extra; Chula B250; Siriraj B200.

Same goes for you. If you have not lived back in your country for 20 years you know F all about the cost of living.

All the info you get is click bait stuff from YouTube

Saving? Through the next year premiums, calculated on actual costs within the group insurance. I am a team player. And it gives me the intense satisfaction of taking part in a some idiotic socialist scam. Why should insurances pay more?

Dunno where you got your info. But I got a quotation from Siriraj Private, showing 20% surcharge for foreigners, on the entire bill. Had also to bring my own nursing staff, so I told them to go eff themselves.

Actually I do, as I have family & friends that I'm in almost constant contact with, and from different parts of the country. YT vloggers is the last place I'd get accurate info from, for the USA, or anywhere.

I don't know anyone personally, that have issues with medical services here, TH, or the USA. Or cry about the cost.

USA is expensive, relative to your coverage. If using quite a bit, Medicare, medicaid, would be cheaper, or about same price as TH. Since pays 80%. Premiums for Plan B suck, but if using, than worth having.

Since Obama's ACA, private insurance is expensive, and doesn't cover much if anything, of first $15k-20k out of pocket cost. But if you can't afford that, then you're on Medicaid anyway. Only good thing about ACA, people found out they could access it.

That can't be any worse or better than some of the countries with unaccessible universal care that I read about. Why some with extra money, do come to TH for private hospital care. Thai medical tourism is booming, for a reason.

Just returned home from visiting Bkk Hospital in one of the major city's in Thailand and must say I was rather surprised to learn from a nurse I know from previous visits, that they actually charge foreigners more than Thais for identical procedures.
I knew and fully understand that public hospitals charges non-Thai citizens the actual cost of the health-care they receive, I agree that the government should not subsidize foreign citizens health-care. (Leave that to the western country's). But charging extra for already profitable healh-care just because they are foreigners makes me feel disgusted.
Knowing that a lot of farangs dies not being able to afford needed health-care, I find it deeply immoral that this version of two-tier practice actually exists.

with a proper insurance you would'nt even bothered

Well known fact for years. A Scandinavian guy a fews years back took the hospital to court over it and lost. Judge told him flat out it was completely ok as foreugners can afford to pay more

My take is this there's a vast difference between an expat and a tourist. Expats should not be part of the 2 tier pricing system. When you're admitted to a hospital you have to show your passport to identify yourself. That same passport has a page stating that you have a one year visa but obviously they don't want to see that, another Thai scam. I'd like to know how much tax I've paid over the past 25 years when I do the weekly shopping. I can assure it's much more than the average Thai has paid. About 15 year ago my wife had an abdominal operation at a private hospital in Bangkok. She asked for a quote and the cost was 75,000 baht, she disputed the cost and told them that she was paying not me. After a 30 minutes wait 10,000 was knocked off the bill. Wait for it, she was even asked how she could afford to pay the bill from her personal money. TIT.

Well, yes and no. While we may not have direct experience, many of us have close family & friends & can depend on what they tell us, salaries, costs aso. As well as a simple comparison between Amazon & Shopee, car ads aso.

Agree. And that is one of the reasons that Health Insurance is so expensive, especially as one gets older.

US medical care is a basket case BUT the system there IS a clever, if evil way to keep taxpayers on the treadmill.

Thai medical tourism is only for cosmetics.
No serious people would go to Thailand for anything proper unless they were from an even worse place.
However, if they wanna have tits attached or their cock and balls turned inside out it IS arguably wOrLd clAss.

Turkey is simlar - Again, no one's going there for anything serious though.

Make the employees feel bad. Yeah, poor.

Bangkok Hospital is near the top, only when it comes to pricing. They are good, but not that good. Avoid them. Plenty of good medical care here. Better than in the US. Way better at a fraction of the cost.

And to the mods I'd like to add the the new "unclear" emoticon would be a lot more useful if it allowed one edit, at any time.

Thailand passed a law 1-2 years ago that authorized/legalized the pricing structure. It's all completely legal.

I had a girlfriend before who came from Myanmar but had 2 IDs, 1 Myanmar and 1 semi Thai (white). Don't ask how or why just accept she did. On the way to Pattaya for a holiday we stopped into a well known cosmetic hospital in Bangkok. She was quoted xxbaht to have a procedure done. She had show here white ID. After the holiday we went to the hospital to have the procedure done. By mistake she gave them her Myanmar ID. The girl processing the ID said oh you not Thai and price was going to be 20% more. I argued a little and a supervisor came out. She said that my gf being from Myanmar had to pay 20% more and said if a foreigner it would be 50% more. I just said to my gf she can get it done in Chiang Mai and we got up to leave. The supervisor then said Ok she can have for original quoted (Thai) price.

Anyway, GFY and enjoy your double pricing khrap.

Low opinions of British people have on most occasions been well earned. Makes me wonder what benefit you could be claiming, even if that is tax deduction for something or other?

Private hospitals are private companies and as such , they should be able charge whatever they like as long as they are open about it, I don't see why it needed to be authorised or legalised. If there was any opposition to their two tier pricing they would simply say that foreigners were charged "full" price where as Thais receive a discount NoThai "authority" is going to argue about that,
