• Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said that there is no information to suggest that this is a terrorism related incident or politically related.

• Currently only one suspect.

• The 26 year old white male first detained was released.

• A 28 year old, white male British national is detained.

• Although suspect was arrested in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where he lives has not been stated.

Police investigating the murder of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe are examining the movements of a suspect after reports that a man was seen leaving a South Yorkshire address linked to him carrying what appeared to be a wooden stick before driving away.

Neighbours said officers arrived shortly before England's World Cup match on Saturday evening, with multiple police vehicles attending the scene before a red car was removed from the driveway in the early hours of Sunday.

Forensic officers in protective suits continued examining the terraced house while uniformed officers guarded the scene.

Neighbours Describe Quiet Street

Residents said the street had rarely seen police activity and expressed shock at the investigation. One neighbour said the man had been living alone after other family members moved out and was largely unknown to those living nearby.

Another resident described the police presence as unprecedented, saying nothing similar had happened during more than a decade on the street.

Police Urge Public Not To Speculate

Miss Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor on Thursday after emergency services were called to the property. Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the discovery that she had sustained serious injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said investigators remain open-minded about the motive but stressed there is currently no indication the killing was terrorism-related or politically motivated. He added that police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation and urged the public to avoid online speculation while enquiries continue.

The police now have a suspect in custody, a 28-year-old white British man.

And I can confirm to the House that this man was not known to Prevent.

The police have cautioned against speculating about the case. That is the right thing to do for Anne’s family and friends.

Government independent terrorism reviewer suggests police broke 'golden rule of investigation'

Jonathan Hall KC, the government’s independent reviewer of terrorism, told Times Radio that Devon and Cornwall police “probably broke one of the golden rules of investigations” after the force said there was “nothing to suggest” the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe “was politically motivated”.

Mr Hall said: “I don’t understand why Devon and Cornwall police were steering the public away from the idea that this was a terrorist case and I don’t know why they didn’t simply say they had an open mind as to the motivation. I think they probably broke one of the golden rules of investigations, which is not to comment on live investigations in case new facts emerge. So that aspect is slightly regrettable.”
