What is the future of 90 day address reporting after THIM?

Featured Replies

I am due for another online address report soon which I will do as normal and expect it work as usual.

HOWEVER, if's my understanding that registering with THIM will become required of all tourists AND expats starting this August.

Apparently THIM handles online address reporting as well.

So does that mean the old system will go away or will there be an option to do it either way?

If it ever does get rolled into the app they will retain the existing system I'm sure, as they will likely do with the TDAC. Not everyone uses phones for these type of things so they'll need to keep the PC/browser based systems.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. It's probably premature to even ask though. I heard about the THIM "requirement" starting in August, but its yet to be seen if that's even true.

You might be getting some of the wording mixed up, the THIM will facilitate in the “required” TDAC.

No.

I'm not confused about what I heard but that doesn't mean that what I heard was accurate.

What is accurate is what is stated on the Royal Gazette, wait for the publication.

Officials said the project is expected to be fully delivered before the end of October, barring unforeseen delays.

The current proposed amendments to Sec 37 of the Immigration Act do not include amending or rescinding 37(5) which mandates the 90-day reporting form TM47.

That wasn't my question.

THIM (Thai Immigration) is Official application from the Immigration Bureau and the Royal Thai Police. Designed to facilitate the pre-registration process for foreign tourists entering Thailand, helping to reduce congestion and waiting times at airport immigration checkpoints. Seems to have nothing to do with 90 day reporting.

Any changes as to how TM47 would be reported would be in ministerial regulation as suggested in the proposal.

I think you're being a tad too literal.

Well this may answer my question.

If they're going this far, I hope they add TM30 self reportin.g.

Thailand’s THIM App Explained: What It Does, What It Doesn’t Replace, and What Expats Should Know

90 day reporting -- likely yes eventually.

Replacing current methods -- unclear

Required for expats to install in August -- NO

  • Phase 2, planned for October 2026, should add 90-day reporting, online queue booking, and visa extension features.

  • If the 90-day reporting feature works, it would remove the need to visit immigration in person or use the existing online portal.

Oh dear, I hope they're not going to abolish my 3-monthly visit to Surin Immigration HQ out on the ring road. It's about the most exciting thing that happens here. South Surin isn't the driest part of Thailand for nothing.

And we head on to Robinson afterwards for a nice lunch ...

For Long time online reporting was problematic.

Even now after trip abroad the online report is not possible.

Find that a joke actually.

Left field prediction: THIM will fail to deliver.

The old systems will not go away. No country in the world ever has, or ever will in the near future, require people to have a smartphone. I still don't know where this rumor started, but it's farcical. For people to be saying that an application that's still in the beta test until October will become the one and only way to do something is obviously false.

I want to clarify that I OBVIOUSLY was talking about the question of whether THIM might replace the current ONLINE system for address reporting. I wasn't in any way saying that if it does that THIM would be the ONLY method (in other words that THIM would ever replace in person or by mail reporting).

As far as the possibility that THIM might replace the current online method, I think that remains entirely possible though of course currently unknown.

Why would immigration bother supporting TWO different ONLINE methods for the same thing?

A separate discussion, but there are definitely countries where having a mobile phone is essential to function as a citizen in society. China might be the most extreme current example.

China does not require visitors or foreigners to have a smartphone as a requirement to enter the country or visit immigration.

Pretty soon our phones will be full of differing apps from Thai Immigration and it's each provincial hub's own ones.

The international trend is crystal clear and Thailand is part of that trend.

Different nations are currently at different stages of this.

AI summary:

Importance of Smartphones in Immigration Processes

In many countries, having a smartphone is crucial for navigating immigration processes. Authorities often require access to electronic devices and social media accounts as part of their procedures. This trend is particularly evident in regions where digital communication is the primary method for interacting with immigration services.

Computer says no.

Have you been an expat recently in China?

I will put this another way.

While not literally codified in LAW, in a number of nations it is in actually a practical necessity to have a mobile to deal with immigration. So in real life, it may as well be codified in law.

  1. In summary, a mobile phone is not just useful but necessary for a smooth experience when entering and living in China as an expat.

You seem to have a very vested interest in the immigration department requiring everyone to have a smartphone. I'm not sure what your obsession is, but it's not going to happen. Thailand is a prime destination for older tourists. Not to mention the fact that these rumors are about an app that is not even going to come out of testing until October. NOTHING will be required starting August. You are fighting for a rumor that's not even true.

My replies.

-- The obsession that you think that I have is in your imagination only.

-- I never said that I knew it was going to be required in August or ever actually. I said that I heard that it would be. So I was only ASKING about what I heard. It's completely wrong to accuse me of a belief about something that I never had.

That said, I think it is basic common sense what the international trend is and Thailand shows no signs of not following such internation trends, sooner or later. That isn't about what I wish for. It's about what is clearly obvious to any honest and objective observer.

Some questions were asked.

Some questions were answered.

The reality of the uncertainty about the timing and eventual functionality of THIM was correctly highlighted.

An assertion was made that minimized the adoption of digital interactions with immigration departments globally.

That assertion was rebutted. It's a fact that more and more immigration systems globally are going in that direction.

That of course doesn't predict the details of how Thailand will move or won't move in that direction. The only certainly in immigration or life is change.
In summary I contend this topic is a very normal discussion topic on a discussion forum where questions are put out there and people respond in many directions.

So therefore my personal opinion is if there was nothing useful about this topic, then there is nothing useful about 99 percent of the topics here, as again this is a very normal discussion forum topic.
