Everest is melting and climbers are not helping by apparently peeing on the glacier Yes, you read that headline correctlyMount Everest has a new environmental problem. Urine. Researchers studying Nepal's Khumbu Glacier have calculated that climbers, guides and support staff are collectively producing more than 6,000 litres of urine every day during the spring climbing season — much of it discharged directly onto the glacier. And while climate change remains overwhelmingly the main cause of Everest's retreat, scientists say the sheer concentration of people at Everest Base Camp is adding an extraordinary human contribution to the problem. Apparently, even going to the toilet at the roof of the world now has environmental consequences. Everest Base Camp isn't exactly a campsiteThe image of hardy mountaineers huddled around a small campfire is rather out of date. During the spring climbing season, Everest Base Camp becomes a temporary city containing thousands of climbers, guides and workers. There are espresso cafes. Large-screen televisions. High-speed internet. Hot showers. Heated tent floors. And, naturally, an enormous amount of fuel consumption. In 2023, the roughly 1,600 tents operating during the 50-day spring season burned 824 LPG canisters, nearly 19,000 litres of kerosene and more than 5,000 litres of petrol. The researchers calculated that the resulting energy output, together with heat from human urine, was enough to melt an estimated 2,492 tonnes of ice and snow. That's roughly an Olympic swimming pool's worth of water. Or about 83 tanker trucks. Or 16,700 bathtubs. Suddenly the phrase “leave no trace” takes on a rather different meaning. And then there is the peeThe urine calculation is the part guaranteed to make people look twice. Climbers at high altitude need to drink heavily to avoid dehydration. Thousands of people therefore produce thousands of litres of warm liquid every day. Much of the solid human waste is collected and transported away from the mountain. Urine, however, is another matter. A substantial amount is simply discharged onto the glacier. The researchers estimate that the heat contained in that urine could melt around 154 tonnes of ice during a single climbing season. No, urine isn't causing the climate crisis. But 154 tonnes of ice is still an extraordinary number when you consider that it comes from something as mundane as people going to the toilet. The glacier is getting warmer anywayThe researchers aren't claiming that climbers are destroying Everest by themselves. Far from it. Climate change remains the dominant driver of glacial melting. But their satellite analysis produced another worrying finding. Looking at Landsat data from 1991 to 2023, they found surface temperatures around Everest Base Camp had increased by an average of about 0.28C per year — roughly twice the rate recorded across the surrounding Khumbu Glacier. And their calculation of human impact was actually conservative. It didn't include heat from helicopters, the body heat of climbers or even the yaks hauling supplies around the camp. Apparently the yaks have been spared the blame — for now. A city on top of a glacierThat may be the real story. Everest Base Camp is effectively a temporary industrial settlement sitting on an environment that is already under severe pressure. Thousands of people arrive within a few weeks. They need food, fuel, electricity, heating, transport, accommodation and water. They generate enormous quantities of waste. And then they leave. The glacier doesn't get to leave. Scientists want the camp movedThe researchers argue that continuing to concentrate thousands of people on a rapidly melting glacier is ultimately unsustainable. Their solution is surprisingly straightforward: Move the base camp. They say a stable site nearby should be considered for relocation in the long term. That would remove some of the direct pressure on the glacier while allowing climbers to continue using the mountain. It might also mean that one day future Everest climbers can tell their grandchildren that, yes, there really was a time when thousands of people lived on a glacier, drank gallons of water and then simply peed on it. The world's highest environmental toiletThere is a serious lesson buried beneath the inevitable jokes. Everest has become a symbol of climate change precisely because humans have transformed even one of the planet's most remote environments into a crowded tourist destination. The mountain is warming. The glacier is retreating. And modern Everest expeditions now require a remarkable amount of energy and infrastructure. The urine isn't the villain. It's the warning sign. When humanity can put espresso machines, heated floors and high-speed internet on a glacier nearly 5,400 metres above sea level, perhaps the bigger question isn't why the glacier is melting. It's whether we should be building a temporary city on it in the first place. And somewhere beneath all the scientific modelling is one unavoidable fact: Everest now has too many people — and apparently they're all peeing on the scenery. SOURCE
