Bangkok has suspended 56 entertainment-related premises after finding safety shortcomings during a three-day inspection drive following a fire in the Lat Phrao area.

Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said on 22 July that City Hall is tightening inspections across the capital, using a new 17-point safety checklist and powers under the 1992 Public Health Act alongside other relevant laws.

Of 1,091 premises similar to entertainment venues under Bangkok Metropolitan Administration responsibility, officials inspected 824 in the past three days. A total of 217 met the required standards, while 551 were ordered to make improvements.

The 56 premises facing temporary closure had safety deficiencies. Operators can reopen after making corrections where problems are not serious, but venues presenting severe risks will be shut immediately, Chadchart said.

Checks will continue for two months

Bangkok will continue inspections for the next two months and revisit sites already checked. Operators will also be required to submit certification from engineers or specialists for matters that cannot be assessed simply by observation, including internal electrical systems and insulation or soundproofing materials.

The public has submitted 27 reports through the Traffy Fondue system, which officials said would be inspected quickly. This Saturday and Sunday, Bangkok will invite all operators to hear guidance on the new checklist.

The checks will also extend beyond entertainment venues to around 14,000 buildings classed under the law as public assembly buildings or theatres, including boxing stadiums.

Wider building safety inspections

The wider programme will examine compliance with building inspection laws. Public assembly buildings and theatres are subject to annual inspections and a major inspection every five years by an independent building inspector.

Chadchart said the Chatuchak district director had been assigned to assist elsewhere since last Friday so that a fact-finding inquiry into the fire could proceed transparently without affecting normal work.

A committee has been appointed to examine fire cases more broadly, not only the Lat Phrao incident. The governor stressed that the reassignment does not mean wrongdoing has been established, as the inquiry has not been completed.

If officials are found to have acted improperly, action will be taken strictly under regulations, he said. The committee has an initial 30-day deadline, which can be extended if necessary to ensure fairness for all sides.
