Trump Ties Saudi Nuclear Deal to Israel Recognition

Featured Replies

The United States will only move forward with a civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia if the kingdom formally recognises Israel by joining the Abraham Accords, President Donald Trump has said.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the proposed agreement, which he stressed would involve no uranium enrichment and be limited to civilian purposes, remained conditional on Saudi Arabia establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

“The Civil Nuclear Deal (There will be no enrichment of material!)... which pertains only to non-military use... will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords,” Trump wrote.

It remains unclear whether the condition is included in the text of the agreement, which has not yet been released, or whether Saudi Arabia has formally accepted it. Riyadh has not publicly responded to Trump's comments.

White House Reaffirms Position

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump has repeatedly made the condition clear during discussions with Saudi leaders.

“He has said if they don't join the Abraham Accords, the deal is off,” she said, adding that discussions with Saudi officials would continue.

The comments followed criticism from nuclear experts and some lawmakers, who warned the agreement could increase long-term nuclear proliferation risks in an already volatile Middle East. Although members of both major US political parties have voiced concerns, opponents are not expected to have enough votes in Congress to block the deal.

According to the US Department of Energy, the package includes a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement and a bilateral safeguards agreement intended to support civilian nuclear development while strengthening non-proliferation measures.

The department said the agreements establish the legal framework for a long-term partnership and will be submitted to Congress for review.

International Oversight and Regional Reaction

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was aware of plans for a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement and expected to receive a request to implement verification measures.

The agency said it looked forward to working with both Washington and Riyadh to ensure those safeguards were carried out.

During Trump's first term, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed the Abraham Accords, normalising relations with Israel. Sudan, Morocco and Kazakhstan later joined the agreements.

Saudi Arabia has consistently maintained that it will not recognise Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state. The White House has nevertheless said the nuclear agreement depends on Riyadh joining the accords.

Israel welcomed Trump's statement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office described potential Saudi participation in the Abraham Accords as “an historic leap forward for peace in the Middle East,” although it did not refer directly to the nuclear agreement.

Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat previously said Israel could accept Saudi Arabia developing nuclear power for peaceful purposes. However, former Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned that civilian nuclear programmes can eventually become military ones.

Enrichment Concerns

The agreement has drawn additional scrutiny after earlier media reports suggested Saudi Arabia might eventually be allowed to enrich uranium, a process that can produce fuel for nuclear power plants but also material suitable for nuclear weapons. Trump's latest remarks appeared to rule out that possibility.

Rosemary Kelanic, director of the Middle East programme at the US-based Defense Priorities think tank, said allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium would represent a significant departure from previous US policy.

She said the United States had never before assisted another country in developing domestic uranium enrichment capabilities because such technology increases the risk of future nuclear weapons development.

The issue comes amid ongoing tensions over Iran's nuclear programme. While Tehran continues to deny seeking nuclear weapons, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in 2018 that although the kingdom was not pursuing a nuclear bomb, it would seek one if Iran successfully developed nuclear weapons.

Ya know, what, it's just like dismantling nukes. If Israel thinks it's the most civilised nation, it should make the overtures, nothing to do with the US.

Nope. If Saudi is to recognise Israel, then Israel must recognise Saudi. That's the way diplomatic relations work.

It may not be possible for Israel to establish relations with Saudi Arabia in light of the violence in Judea and Samaria, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the Council of Foreign Relations on Wednesday.

Blinken said that “both Saudi Arabia and Israel are interested in the prospect of normalization” and are looking for the US “to play a role in that particular effort and we’re very much engaging in it.”

The effort is “incredibly challenging, hard, not something that can happen overnight,” he added,” but it is also a real prospect.”

However, Blinken said, “we've told our friends and allies in Israel that if there's a fire burning in their backyard it's going to be a lot tougher, if not impossible, to both deepen the existing agreements as well as to expand them to include, potentially, Saudi Arabia.”

So , It"may not" be or maybe possible for Israel to establish relations with Saudi Arabia in light of the violence in Judea and Samaria

Someone should tell them China can sell them it probably at half the price and no need to recognise anyone.

I post on forums to talk to real people, rather than just to read and reply to newspaper reports .

If you cant even be bothered to write something yourself, then I certainly arent going to be bothered to read it and reply to it .

Ends up with me spending all my time just reading media reports and replying to the points journalist makes posted by someone who cant even be bothered to write himself and just C&Ps

AFAIK, all their nukes were developed independently of US support. Do you know different. Only Israel had help from France and South Africe: brothers in apartheid.

No thanks. I'll say it again: Israel should make a civilised approach. Or perhaps they'd prefer to bomb them back to the stone age (as the rhetoric goes).

You are trying to make this thread all about Israel .

Its your one track mind in action again .

Will Saudi capitulate and recognise Israel's right to exist and join the Abraham Accords ?

Will Saudi be willing to make a peace agreement without their long sought after Palestine state ?

So, in future when you post misleading statements, i.e. "Israel and Saudi Arabia were well on their way to signing peace deal, that was until Palestinians deliberately scuppered that peace del by invading Israel and causing the current war" when clearly they were not, and I post an article clearly saying from the then US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, months before the current conflict started in October 2023, said that the violence perpetrated by Israel in the Occupied Territories, "Judea and Samaria" to you, was a red line for the Saudi's, that and the fact the Saudi's want a Independent State of Palestine, on the basis of pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Which as we all know has been totally opposed by the current Israeli Government.

In conclusion, if you're going to post untruths or misleading statements I will expect some factual proof from you, as per the rules of this forum.

The reply you gave above to my original question, which was, and I quote "So, everything said in the article is false, and not as reported, is it?"

Another post of word salad, that has no bearing on the points being made.

Iran received initial nuclear fuel and research technology from the United States

What I posted was true , here's the requested evidence that Israel and Saudi were having peace talks

Saudi Arabia and Israel quietly prepare ‘deal of the century’

Global Insight investigates a major yet secretive new alliance between Saudi Arabia and Israel intended to bring peace to a tumultuous region and make Saudi Arabia the uncontested leader of the Middle East.

As countries in the Middle East move to re-position themselves to face new perceived threats, a major new alliance, and one previously considered implausible, appears to be emerging. The conservative Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is signalling it can strike an unprecedented peace deal with Israel, a country that is still known in some Saudi books as the ‘Zionist Enemy’.
