Thai Immigration Police have detained a 36-year-old Chinese national wanted in mainland China over an alleged billion-baht bribery case after locating him outside a hotel in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district.

The man, identified only as Mr Xin, had allegedly entered Thailand to evade a Chinese arrest warrant issued on 16 June 2026 for bribing a person who was not a state official.

Arrest followed cross-border security information

Officers from the Special Operations Division of the Immigration Bureau Investigation Division planned the operation and deployed investigators to surround and detain Mr Xin outside the hotel.

The operation was overseen by Pol Col Chuwong Utaisang, superintendent of the Special Operations Division, and Pol Lt Col Witthaya Thongphueng, deputy superintendent. The arrest team was led by Pol Maj Jurinchart Sota.

Thai authorities said they had received cross-border security information indicating that China's Ministry of Public Security had formally issued the warrant against Mr Xin.

Immigration officers then checked his status and documents through the bureau's information technology system. They found he fell under Section 12(7) of Thailand's Immigration Act 1979, which bars a person for whom a foreign state authority has issued an arrest warrant.

Permission to remain revoked

Immigration authorities immediately revoked Mr Xin's permission to stay in Thailand. Police said he was informed of his legal rights with a Chinese-language interpreter present throughout the process.

He was transferred to investigators at Division 3 of the Immigration Bureau Investigation Division. He will be held in detention while authorities proceed with either extradition arrangements or deportation from Thailand.

For foreigners living in or visiting Thailand, the case underlines that immigration permission can be cancelled where officials determine a person is prohibited under the Immigration Act, including when an overseas arrest warrant is identified. This does not concern ordinary visa renewals, but it shows the consequences can be immediate when a foreign national is the subject of an international law-enforcement alert.

Immigration police signal further checks

Pol Col Chuwong said the operation reflected the Immigration Bureau's strict enforcement of the Immigration Act 1979 against foreign nationals regarded as a security risk or linked to transnational crime groups.

He said Thailand was not a hiding place for transnational criminals, adding that immigration officers would continue operations and checks in areas considered at risk.

The case comes amid continuing scrutiny of foreign criminal networks operating or seeking refuge in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok and other locations with large international populations.
