Interesting you went 12 months without disconnection. I'll be honest it only cost me 60p per year for the sms and I added £10 credit when I set it up so I'm good for 6 years.

I've had the sim for years & use it when I visit the UK every 6 months so maybe I just got lucky that one time but as I don't plan on visiting the UK until next April (got back in May) I think I'll do the same as you & add a £10 credit to the phone and send an SMS to myself every 5 months or so.

Edit: Added £20 to the SIM as I wanted some credit on there in case I need to call my UK Bank when I'm migrating to a new phone at the weekend, if I don't then I'll use it to buy a Data Plan on my next UK Trip.

Cost 30p to send an SMS to my Thai Number.
