Six months after Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night, the investigation appears to have stalled, with no suspects identified and mounting criticism over how the case was handled in its crucial early hours.

According to a source close to the investigation, pressure is growing on authorities to deliver answers in one of America's most closely watched kidnapping cases.

"This can't go on for another six months," the source said, adding that "there is plenty of blame to go around."

Family renews desperate appeal

Nancy's daughter, Today show presenter Savannah Guthrie, issued an emotional plea on social media, urging anyone with information to come forward.

"We are desperate," she wrote. "Someone knows something. There is a way to do the right thing."

Her appeal comes as investigators continue to search for fresh leads, with a reward still on offer for information that could help solve the case.

Questions over early response

A Wall Street Journal investigation has raised fresh concerns over the handling of the investigation, reporting a series of alleged missteps during the critical first hours after Nancy disappeared.

According to the report, deputies initially underestimated the significance of dried blood found outside the house, failed to secure the crime scene, and delayed key search operations while investigators tried to determine whether she had been kidnapped or had wandered away.

The newspaper also reported that members of the public, delivery drivers and media crews were able to access areas that would normally be preserved for forensic examination.

Agencies trade responsibility

The Wall Street Journal also highlighted apparent tensions between the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department over the handling of the investigation.

The FBI said the county remains the lead agency and insisted it had responded to every request for assistance, even when those requests came late.

With the investigation now six months old and still lacking any major breakthrough, questions are growing over whether crucial opportunities to identify the kidnapper may have been lost during the first hours of the inquiry.
