Armed Man Arrested Near Golf Course Before Trump's Visit

A man was arrested in California after he was spotted on the grounds of a golf course owned by President Donald Trump in the Los Angeles area, authorities said, ahead of the president’s visit for a Republican fundraising dinner.

Jeanine John Taele, 38, was detained at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes on Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said. Investigators said he was found with a pistol and ammunition that was illegal under state law.

Sheriff’s officials said Taele was observed walking around the course taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities.

Trump is in California to attend the fundraising dinner at the course on Tuesday.

Charges And Ammunition Seized

Taele is being held on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of armour-piercing or prohibited ammunition.

The sheriff’s department said plainclothes federal agents reported a suspicious person to local authorities at around 1530 ET (2330 BST). When deputies confronted Taele, they found he was wanted in connection with a robbery investigation by the El Segundo Police Department, about 15 miles (25km) north of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Authorities searched Taele and said he had a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition. In his vehicle, which was parked at the golf course, they found a loaded pistol and a loaded magazine containing hollow-point ammunition.

Hollow-point bullets are designed to flatten and widen on impact, causing damage to internal organs. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States and bans magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

FBI Search, Ongoing Investigation

The sheriff’s department said Taele’s home in Downey, also in the Los Angeles area, was raided on Monday by agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force together with officers from the sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau.

Investigators said the home search was conducted due to “potential security implications” linked to the incident. Inside, they found an “illegally modified AR platform rifle”, a .45 pistol, body armour, high-capacity magazines, large quantities of ammunition for pistols and rifles, and multiple notebooks containing what the sheriff’s department described as “concerning statements”.

The investigation is continuing with assistance from the US Secret Service, and officials said additional charges could be brought later.

The sheriff’s department said it had not identified any “credible threat” to local communities. In a statement, it said the case highlighted the importance of vigilance and strong partnerships between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, along with proactive steps to investigate suspicious activity.

Security Context And Future Visits

The arrest took place during a rare trip by Trump to California. According to the White House, he is scheduled to give a speech critical of California Governor Gavin Newsom after his second term ends, a move that comes as Newsom is widely seen as preparing for a possible presidential run in 2028.

On Wednesday, Trump is travelling to Las Vegas to deliver a speech at a casino. The visits occur as campaign activity increases ahead of the mid-term elections in November, when control of Congress is at stake.

Trump has survived three assassination attempts in recent years. After the most recent attack, in which a gunman stormed a Washington hotel during a White House dinner, his security team said it would review its protective protocols for the president.

Officials have not said whether Taele was seeking to harm Trump, and he has not been charged with any offence linked to such an allegation.
