That's a rubbish airline anyway. Nobody with any sense flies with that lot. Anyone sane knows it’s the airline of choice for bogans and muppets.

Can passengers select to sit on the floor and therefore no seat charge? Or perhaps 'floor' has a specific Baht charge?

Another post intended to misrepresent and to mislead. The airline is charging its fares based upon services provided. Basic airfares without the OH access are less expensive than the standard airfares which include the OH storage. How difficult is that to understand? Many JetStar passengers do not travel with carry ons and did not want to subsidize the passengers who did. It's fair and equitable. You pay for the services you want. Why should every passenger have to pay an extra A$25+ to cover the passengers who want to use OH space?

Took Jetstar from Singapore to Oz once (2006?). Yes, low-cost, and I learned how to deal with such from Air Asia. Read the fine print before buying the ticket, turns out the luggage allotment was ridiculously small, maybe 10kg, so I paid a few bucks extra at purchase. At check-in just about everyone else got snagged with the extra bag cost, and it was relatively steep, around US$5 per kilo, and it looked like they were all paying upwards of $20. Considering the budget ticket was originally around $80, well, so much for the budget.

7kgs carry on for free is normal. Most use it.

The change is that the headline price must include a cabin bag. The airlines will still be able to sell a cheaper ticket without a cabin bag included. Unnecessary smoke and mirrors and not to the benefit of the paying passengers.

Nonsense or not, the headline price is what matters. It must now include hand luggage instead of showing a low price that increases during booking. The final ticket may still be cheaper if you choose to fly without hand luggage, but that is a discount from the advertised price, not an extra charge added later.

The price you pay is what matters, not what some office dweller in Brussels or wherever thinks should be the headline price.

It's the way it is currently because that's what most passengers want, it's clear, and it works for both airlines and passengers.

Well, it matters to me. As a frequent flyer, I want to compare ticket prices without going through every booking just to find out whether hand luggage is included. So the headline price matters to me, and probably to many others as well.

There is already a jungle of ticket options and headline prices. If this makes even part of it simpler and more transparent, I am pleased.

Search sites like Google flights, Kayak, Momondo etc let you select what carry-on luggage you want and simply eliminate options which don't suit you. Couldn't be simpler but no, not good enough for the meddlers and more difficult for the majority of travellers whose bottom line is price.

To try and keep on topic, Jetstar are just doing what other LCCs have been doing for ages and what people want to see.

It is a very reasonable option if one has a lot of baggage like sporting equipment. A few years ago I flew Sydney to Phuket with 54 kg total baggage for a little bit more than $300 AUD. With full service airline you either have to fly business class or pay a fortune for extra baggage.

Only airline that flies direct with cheap flights.

It's an elastic market that low-cost carriers, (LLC), try to exploit. They will initiate a new charge to see if it compliments the existing profitability. If not, they will quietly discontinue it and seek another avenue.

You will be permitted to carry on a backpack or bag that can fit under the seat in front of you free.If you have a bigger carry on bag then you pay.I am sure that we have all watched people loading bags into the overhead lockers that they can hardly lift up and can't shut the lid down withot forcing it. You are correct technically.

The problem is if you have a small bag it should fit under the seat in front of you, but if its slightly too big, it must go in the OH for safety, so you would need to pay extra presumably.

So if you have no carry on at all, its clear, but if you have a small carry on that will fit under the seat, but if Jetstar put you in an exit row seat you cannot put your bag under the seat for safety reasons. What happens then?

If you're behind an exit row seat then it's no problem as it goes under the seat in front of you. However, if you're in an exit row seat then the requirement is waived. Works like this for all other airlines.
