Are they really that broke or do they just have a devious nature and enjoy the thrill of theft and trying not to get caught?

Also, do they ever bother to check if there's a camera filming them?

Not justifying anything, just describing what i know. Been in thailand for 13 years now, work here in bkk (yes, i have a "real" work permit etc... :) ), and earn more than the 30k/month mentioned (50k/month is the minimum legally required in my case anyways). Many mid-level office managers don't even earn that amount, and live quite decently with a familly , just not in central Bangkok (like sathorn, where i live), usually in the suburbs. They're just not going to buy their groceries in Villa market or Tops market every week, or go to "tourist oriented" places , 5 star resorts on vacation near the beach on the WE etc...

Fair enough. Personally I wouldn’t think of living here even on 50k a month. That’s as a single person.

Let alone work here.

When I was working I always earned and invested in my home country. Only spend in Thailand.

In Malaysia where we have well maintained burial garden , the foreign workers would wait until we are done with prayers and offerings before taking the offerings. These offerings are clean and of quality . Foods we ourselves would consume in our daily living. We would regard the offerings as meritorious deeds both to the esoteric and living. Just remember to wait a while until the joss sticks were burnt out.
