I recently got a new British Passport in Bangkok. The issueers of the Passport told me it was fine to immediately travel abroad with new and clipped old passport. Then on return go to local Immigration to have the documents transferred. Both Thai Immigration on exiting The Kingdom and returning also had no problem with this. Nong Khai Immigration say this is not correct and refuse to transfer. They say I will have to use 2 passports until I renew extension of stay. Is this correct or are they just being awkward. Any advice or opinion would be much appreciated. TIA

They are being lazy.

Would be somewhat understandable if extension was due soon.

Just travel with both pp

BTW: do you have reentry permit in old pp. Where was it issued?

Who are the 'issuers' that you refer to? Your embassy or an agent?

VFS I would imagine as they are the ones that handle UK passport applications and "issue" (hand over) the passport when it's received by them from the UK.

Sadly your first mistake was believing anything VFS told you about what to do after you get your new passport <- they have abso-tively, posi-lutely NOTHING to do with thai immigrations 😕

You should have followed the process, got the new passport, taken both passports to the immigration office where your extension was issued, gotten the extension and any re-entry permits moved to the new passport and THEN traveled out of the country

Just curious;
Is the current extension you have in the old passport from the Nong Khai Immigration office too?

I have seen offices refuse to move stamps IF the extension wasn't issued by them (even if you have a TM30 filed and show you live in their area now)

If your current extension is indeed from Nong Khai then you're stuck, you wait it out and get the stamps moved when you apply for your next yearly extension.. And if you're traveling outside the country between now and then you carry BOTH passports

I can give my personal experience at Jomtien. I travelled into Thailand in October with old and new passports, with a single re entry in old passport. Within a couple if weeks I visited immigration and had the stamps transferred to new passport. In April I got my new extension in my new passport.

That's not the same situation though, as you acquired your new passport outside Thailand. The OP's immigration office is miffed because he didn't transfer his stamps before leaving Thailand after getting his new passport within Thailand.

As per Tod post earlier the OP took advice from VSF. Mistake.

In any event the OP can transfer at time of next extension.

Beats me why the OP didn't renew his passport in the UK like you did, if that is where he was bound shortly after picking up his new passport in Bangkok!

The O/P answered on another thread that all his extensionso were from Buriram and that he'd actually checked with them beforehand to see if he could move the stamps after he returned.

I have no idea why they wouldn't move his stamps for him.

General note: stamps will (in general) only be transferred at imm office where the stamp was issued.

By way of example many years ago I attempted to transfer stamps (extension, reentry permit visa info etc) to new pp.

CW did that however would not transfer my reentry permit. When I questioned why was told that the permit was issued at DMK go there to have it moved to new pp.

I didn't bother. Just traveled abroad with both passports.

More to it now. I thought they had given both to my wife. Now she tells me they didn't. I got charged money but no receipt. So now I have no Passport and no proof Immigration Office has it.

Not understanding much of your thread.

So to clarify where was the original Non O issued. If in Thailand which immigration office.

Where did you obtain last extension stamp in old pp.

You state you paid a fee and implies immigration did transfer the stamps.

You state that immigration did not hand both pp back.

So what do you have now.

The new pp?

Was anything transferred.

Why is wife dealing with immigration and not you.

After obtaining the new pp in Bangkok did you need to obtain a new reentry permit or was there already one in old pp.

Was the reentry permit obtained at immigration office. Which one?

A suggestion. Post a tread that is clear and follow up.

At one point you stated that you only had one pp.

Also never clear where existing stamps were issued and immigration office you dealt with for transfer.

Then the update you state....

But, as far as I am concerned, the big mystery remains as to why you chose to subject yourself to the cumbersomely bureaucratic procedures for renewing British passports from Thailand, when you could have far more easily accomplished renewal by hanging on doing this until you were back in the UK!
