Toyota is pushing towards a new generation of solid-state batteries that could dramatically reshape electric cars, promising far greater range in a smaller, lighter package while cutting charging times.

The technology replaces the liquid electrolyte used in today’s lithium-ion batteries with a solid material. Toyota’s roadmap points towards increasingly ambitious range targets, but the bigger prize may be making long-distance electric driving feel as convenient as filling up with petrol.

Toyota Targets a Battery Breakthrough

Toyota has previously targeted around 1,000 kilometres for an initial generation of solid-state batteries, with later prototypes aiming for around 1,200 kilometres. The company has also said it has managed to halve the pack’s size, weight and cost by streamlining battery-material production.

But the headline range figure is not necessarily the most important development. Most drivers rarely travel anything close to such distances in a single day.

The real game-changer could be charging. A system capable of taking a battery from 10% to 80% in around 10 minutes would bring electric refuelling much closer to the convenience drivers expect from petrol stations.

Lexus Could Get First Crack

Toyota is expected to introduce the technology initially in higher-end Lexus models and in limited numbers, reflecting the high cost of producing solid-state cells.

The company wants costs to fall sufficiently for the technology to reach more mainstream vehicles closer to 2030. It is also working with Japanese oil refiner Idemitsu Kosan on solid electrolytes and Sumitomo Metal Mining on cathode materials.

The Race Is Already Intensifying

Toyota is not alone. BMW is advancing its own solid-state programme, while Rimac is reportedly developing battery technology for a future Bugatti project. Chinese manufacturers are also pushing aggressively into the field.

There are environmental and supply-chain challenges. Solid-state batteries can require significantly more lithium than conventional packs, potentially increasing pressure on already complicated supply chains.

But whoever succeeds in producing the technology reliably and affordably at scale could set the direction of the next generation of electric vehicles.

For drivers, the breakthrough would not necessarily mean needing hundreds more miles of range. It could mean something simpler: stopping for ten minutes and no longer worrying about range at all.
