Officials Explain Why Nonthaburi Shooting Alert Made No Sound

The Thai government says a Cell Broadcast warning issued during the Debsirin Nonthaburi School shooting was deliberately sent without an audible alarm. Officials explained that a loud notification could have revealed the location of students, teachers or others hiding from the armed attacker and placed them in greater danger. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation sent the warning to mobile phones within roughly five kilometres of the school, advising people to avoid the area. Unlike warnings for earthquakes, tsunamis or flash floods, authorities can alter the sound, geographical coverage and urgency of Cell Broadcast messages depending on the type of emergency. The government also urged the public to follow official instructions and avoid livestreaming security operations that could compromise the safety of officers or people sheltering nearby.
