The curiously awkward geopolitical situation of US expats in Thailand

Featured Replies

I knew that my current assertion the majority of Americans oppose Trump's war of choice against Iran would trigger the maga fascist cult members.

Of my profile of a typical American which I consider relevant to the specific geopolitical topic here, that is the only one that might be controversial.

Nobody needs a poll to know that Americans support South Korea over North Korea!

So here are some poll results.

Yes the 50 50 result from Fox is an outlier but of course Fox is basically a propaganda organ for the Trump regime so should be discounted.

    • Economic Impact: A significant majority, around 70%, are worried that the war will lead to rising oil and gasoline prices.

    • Worthwhile Conflict: Approximately two-thirds of Americans feel that the war has not been worthwhile.

The majority American positions I described are not keftist. They are very much mainstrean.

Specifically why do you say that?

Honestly I think pretty much all adults are hypocritical in some degree or another. That's kind of the human condition but that's not the topic here.

Yes, most adults exhibit some degree of hypocrisy, as it is a common human trait where individuals claim moral standards that their own behavior does not always align with. This often stems from cognitive dissonance and a desire to avoid personal responsibility.

It's best to preface your statements with "In my opinion," otherwise link to sources supporting what you consider to be your statements of "fact."

Each one of your allegations needs to have a link right underneath it, otherwise it is only "your opinion." Hell, I don't even care if your sources are biased, but at least support you so-called factual statements.

Can't say I give a flying one about countries in which I've never lived (or even visited).

Why would Americans care?

Do you guys ever make comments without personal insults ? And you wonder why the democrats are also showing abysmal numbers.

Smh.

What you call personal insults is just me pointing out the patently obvious.

Trump even said it himself:

"I love the poorly educated" (2016)

"Smart people don't like me." (2025)

As for personal insults, you might want to scroll through Trump's Truth Social posts. You might also Google the last few dozen Q&A of Trump in the Oval Office. Many people are saying he is the most prolific "insulter" ever.

It's interesting to see the variety of reactions to this topic.

Some expected (the moronic triggering of the maga fascist types) and some unexpected.

When I wrote the OP I wasn't thinking at all about the social situation of Americans in Thailand as far as being "out" about being American or open about their political beliefs (to either Thais or other foreigners).

I was just musing in general about the facts of Americans geopolitical situation in Thailand. In general based on the breakdown I posted about majority American views on such relevant topics as the Russia Ukraine war.

I thought of this topic when I heard the news about Thailand making a big energy deal with Russia.

I'm not criticizing that deal. If I was a Thai official I would probably make the same deal. A deal Thailand was pushed into by the stupid actions of my own American president in Iran.

But what struck me is as Americans we're living in a country that is now in effect helping Russia fund it's terroristic war on Ukraine and that as most Americans do support Ukraine rather than Russia, most Americans anywhere including those living in Thailand would be happy to hear if Ukraine can ever attack the far eastern Russian source of the energy Thailand is buying.

That is an awkward position, yes?

I find myself apologizing for the idiot in chief more than I like, not much else to be done.

I have done that myself especially to Europeans but again I didn't intend THIS topic to be about that social part of it.

I have posted topics in the past related to that.

However, the typical American expat in Thailand supports Ukraine eventually hitting ALL of Russia's energy supplies and ALL would logically include those in the far east of Russia bound for Thailand (if it is ever possible) and ALSO as any person living in any country wants to live in a country with a secure energy supply.

I'm probably not"typical," but I'm an American and I certainly don't think hitting Russia's energy supplies is a good idea. Quite the contrary, for any number of reasons. I should probably just shut up. Let's just say WW III would not be a good idea, and if these wars continue to escalate, that's exactly where we'll be, if we're still around.

Do you realize the USA is currently buying energy from Russia?

You sound confused.

I never said ALL Americans.

I said most and my assertion is provably correct.

Your expression of fear of poking the bear is a reflection of the effectiveness of the Kremlin propaganda machine.

The majority of Americans understand Ukraine has no choice but to take aggressive actions in Russia to bring the war home to Russians.

The US does buy a little INDIRECTLY of Russian sourced oil refined in other countries.

Such things are messy.

It is very far from the GOTCHA that you imagine it is.

Nothing like the direct deals by Thailand, India, and others.

A reminder that THIS topic is not about the internal political division between Americans.

There have been many many other topic for that.

The OP refers to majority American political positions on geopolitical issues relating to Thailand which include different kinds of Americans.

Actually, you said "typical," not "most." And I didn't say "all." I'll concede the point, though. There will never be an issue where ALL Americans agree on a certain point.

And yes, the US does import oil and other forms of energy from Russia. Crude refined in other countries, oil imported by way of price cap mechanisms, and by way of other schemes. The oil comes out of Russia and ends up in America. Trump wants to keep oil prices down, keep the economy from imploding, and he wants to make it through the mid-term elections.

As most Americans DO support Ukraine over Russia, (that is a FACT). it is fair to say that a typical American supports Ukraine over Russia.

This isn't a court of law of splitting hairs over language details.

The idea has been conveyed in a way that anyone with common sense can understand.

I'm not arguing with you. Of course, "most" Americans aren't too bright. That's also a fact. Never forget, the median IQ is less than 100.

So you're saying you think it's the "bright" position to support Russia and North Korea? Got it.

There is more than a zero chance that war will erupt between the US and China in the foreseeable future over Taiwan.

Maybe not. Taiwan is but one election from putting in power the KMT which favors a Hong Kong style arrangement with the PRC. Which, btw, is why I do not want advanced American weaponry going to Taiwan, which could then just turn it over to the PRC. Similar worries for South Korea, which now has a pro-PRC government in place. I don't think these two countries are where America should place its trust (and money, investment, and weaponry). Instead, strengthen relations with the Philippines and Japan. If they go, then there is going to be trouble.

I do trust you saw the news of the Malaysian PM giving a greenlight to the PRC to take Taiwan either peacefully or by force.

I'm certain China wants Taiwan.

I'm also certain they would rather take it peacefully

But still a more than zero chance of war over it

In some ways it is odd that the KMT has become the pro PRC party, as they were Chiang's anti-Communist stalwart for decades. In another way, it is not odd, as the KMT always saw China and Taiwan as one country, with just the ROC as the legitimate government.

If there ever was a good timing opportunity for China to go for it now or soon is it

So if they don't it means they are confident they can take it without blood.
