I have friends that live in Koh Phangan, and they tell me that the Israelis have more or less engaged in what might be described as a hostile takeover of the island. They control a multitude of businesses that are supposed to be exclusively for Thais, and somehow they're getting away with it as they seem to hold significant sway over the local police.

Much of the damage was done by the attitude of the Israelis in Thailand, the arrogance and a gross sense of self entitlement. You could argue that they had this coming to them and it was long overdue.

A handwritten sign on a chalkboard on an unnamed shop at an unknown address isn't much to be worried about. As far as I can see, this story hasn't gone any further past the Phuket Times than Khaosod and AN.

If the shop is on a street with a lot of foot traffic by Israeli tourists, one of them will snap a photo and post it online, which will reveal the shop's name and location. We can then better determine if the owner has a legitimate grievance.

But if not many Israelis pass by, then it doesn't matter what the sign reads. It could say:

If past incidents are any indication, the sign will disappear in a couple of days. It's nothing for Jews or anyone else to worry about.

Clearly Israelis feel welcome in Thailand and have made LOS one of their top tourist destinations, particularly young Israelis who have completed military service. Signs in a handful of obscure shops or restaurants- Thailand has hundreds of thousands of hotels, eateries and shops that cater to tourists- mean nothing.

I oppose any rude or not inappropriate or not respectful behavior of any kind from anyone. It's true, and I'm ashamed and regret that there are too many Israelis involved.

Don’t travel as much now but 20 odd years ago it was pretty common to see “No Israelis” in the reception of cheaper hotels.
