Ayeyarwady flooding deepens after embankment collapse

Six townships in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Delta remain inundated more than three weeks after an embankment on the Ngawun River collapsed, with residents warning that repairs are inadequate as monsoon rains continue.

Widespread impact

The July 30 breach affected Lemyethna, Hinthada, Ngathaingchaung, Kyonepyaw, Yekyi and Kyaunggon. The civilian National Unity Government reported seven deaths and 158,589 people displaced or affected in the delta, while nationwide flooding has affected more than 619,000 people.

Residents say the embankment had not received routine inspections and maintenance since the 2021 coup. Authorities have deployed machinery, sandbags, bamboo and steel piles, but locals say the river current continues to destabilise the repairs.

Access and relief

Roads in parts of the delta are already under water, and relief camps have had to move again as flooding reaches higher ground. Local groups say motorboats and fuel are urgently needed for rescue work.
