UN says Myanmar human rights crisis has reached new low

The United Nations says Myanmar’s human rights situation has fallen to a “new low”, citing attacks on civilians, abuses against the Rohingya and the growth of illicit economies during the country’s prolonged conflict.

UN warning

The UN human rights office said its latest report covered the year to May 31 and described suffering, misery and cruelty across the country. It said more than 100,000 people were estimated to have been killed across all sides since the 2021 coup.

The report said military tactics including airstrikes, arson, displacement and expanded surveillance had deepened civilian suffering. It also said the military and Arakan Army were committing widespread and systematic abuses against the Rohingya minority.

Illicit economies

Illegal rare-earth mining, drug production, human trafficking and scam centres were identified as factors financing the conflict. The UN said hazardous chemicals from mining were contaminating waterways and harming communities.
