Vietnam considers easier entry rules for foreign tourists

Yes.

Interesting.

Don't hold your breath.

I can't see them ever offering that at middle- class wealth / income levels similar to Thailand and the Philippines.

They should do a digital nomad visa but if they do it will have a high financial bar.

Happy to listen to the opinion of others.

Can you tell me what lead you to your opinion?

Why do you see it in the distance future and not the near future?

Why do you think the financials will be steep?

Sure, I understand Vietnam doesn't want to be like Thailand, but other countries in South East Asia offer long stay visas, why do you think Vietnam will not, or basically have a pseudo long stay visa?

  • Vietnam's visas can't really get any easier than they are now. I've not heard of a visa refusal even with multiple one day border runs to BKK and KUL every 90 days. TRC are relatively simple provided

  • Vietnam is already having trouble with the young drunken shirtless louts, especially in Danang, very similar to Thailand's recent problems. I agree a retirement visa would be a good step, lots of Auss

  • If they did, they know they would get inundated by broke-assed farang deadbeats fleeing Thailand who think slumming it in Cambodia is beneath them. Vietnam is hoping to keep it classy.

Thailand's visa system actively filters out people who try.

You said live..That implies several years. Not possible legally on tourism status.

Many get away with it for a while, before eventually being forced to get an appropriate visa, if you call learning Muay Thai an appropriate visa. 😂

That's easy.

The pattern they've already shown.

Vietnam is a very serious country.

Yes they want mass tourism.

They don't want mass foreign residents that don't provide a significant benefit.

Its so obvious to me that I don't understand why you don’t get it.

The DTV visa isn't a tourist visa

Vietnam is seeking to introduce a long stay visa. It was in more than one media source.

Until they introduce such a visa it is just a pipedream and CANNOT be relied on for retirement planning.

So, are you suggesting Thailand wants mass foreign residents that don't provide a significant benefit?

I didn't mention the DTV.

I'll say it again, yes, Vietnam currently does not have a retirement / long stay visa. No argument from me about this. I never suggested otherwise.

It's been in the media that the Vietnam government is considering long stay visas, among other visa classes as well.

What's wrong with discussing what they may or may not offer, and when, and what possible impact it may have on Thailand?

DTV supports taking courses.

You're just playing petty silly games now.

You can't live legally continuously for multiple years on Thailand tourist visas. Period.

The above is the quote, below is my reply!

(by me)
In the 80 lines or so of the article that is the only mention of long stay and nowhere is it defined nor is the word retirement mentioned!

WRT long stay it is only mentioned wrt "international capital into tourism and resort development"!

I think it is fine to diiscuss this and offer speculation about what may happen.

After all this is a discussion forum.

Very few topics are off limits (you know what those are).

In that vein, it's obvious Vietnam does NOT want be like THailand.

Offering a retirement visa with modest financial requirements would be like Thailand so they won't do that.

As far as digitlal nomad visas, the Thai DTV visa has been kind of a cluster puck.

So Vietnam won't copy that if they offer any such visa at all.

Also to you, with many neighboring countries offering a "retirement visa" a "long stay visa" a "My Second Home visa" a "business visa" or whatever you would like it to be called, why is it so unimaginable to you that Vietnam would also offer something similar in the future? Serious question?

It only becomes a serious question when the finally announceit.

I suggest that you stick your Mystic Meg crystal ball somewhere that the sun does not shine until that happens!

Sure, I accept that.

It's only my opinion that it's a matter of time before Vietnam offers a long stay visa. I have no time frame based on the statements of politician in Vietnam.

Vietnam being Vietnam, things tend to happen either very quickly, or very slowly. It could be in 1 month, or 1 year, or in 10 years.

Once again, what's wrong with discussing the possibility it is sooner rather than later. Why do you write it off as if it will never happen?

1 hour ago, scottiejohn said:

Well, the point for me, personally, is Vietnam is my Plan B. Nothing more, nothing less. Anything that makes my Plan B more accessible or more livable is good news to me.

There would be some living in Thailand that would rather be living in Vietnam. That option could exist soon.

There are some nearing retirement that may have another option in the future.

We speculate on Thai issues on this forum all the time. Example, the crackdown on Thai company nominees at the moment.

What's the harm in speculating on a Vietnam long stay visa? Why should it not be discussed until they announce it?

That's all I have ever suggested. I am glad you approve. 🙂

It is, but some people who think they are, how did you put it, "THai-ier" than the next farang struggle with any subject that doesn't have Thailand on a pedestal.

I accept this, but then again, just some years ago they have a 1 year multi entry tourist visa that could be extended in country. Zero financials.

They announced the start of the Iran War.

Let's not discuss the Iran war until they announce the war is over and we know the result. 😂 😂

What a ridiculous comment.

5 year family VISA costs $50.

Just need to marry or impregnate a local.

Plenty of willing local women to choose from and at a very low cost.

Not to mention the Viet women are way prettier than Thai women.

Because, like Thailand, they will only seek older, high net worth foreigners. Serious answer.

No, replying to you.

Discussing probabilities seems beyond you.

Yes. That's right. I am younger than most retirees, and in good health and no problems with mobility. Doing a visa run every 3 months would be no problem for me, thus, Vietnam is my Plan B.

Plenty of sham marriages in Vietnam. One expat I met has never even seen his wife, literally.

5 years for $50USD, no other hoops. Long stay is already happening in Vietnam, albeit, under questionable circumstances, yet, it seems a bridge too far for some members to even contemplate that Vietnam will introduce a long stay visa in the future. Go figure.

Didn't you just say there was nothing in the article about a retirement visa? Now, you are suggesting they will only seek older, high net worth foreigners.

You have contradicted yourself, again.

It will be interesting to see what impact, if any, it will have on Thailand, in the present, and into the future.

Once they announce their retirement visa deal, if it's reasonable, many looking to retire and live in South East Asia may very well chose Vietnam over Thailand.

Excellent, hopefully they will go and moan on a different part of the forum.
