The Offshore Wind Windfall

The Crown Estate, which holds the legal rights to the seabed around England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, has experienced a massive profit surge driven by an offshore wind boom: [1, 2]

• Total Profits: The Crown Estate recorded a net operating profit of £1.245 billion, following previous consecutive years of profits exceeding £1.1 billion. [1, 2, 3, 4]

• Wind Contribution: Roughly two-thirds of this revenue comes entirely from the offshore wind sector. [1]

• The Fees: Wind farm developers pay hefty competitive "option fees" to secure seabed leases (such as the £875 million paid in a recent year), followed by an operational rent equal to 2% of the wind farm's turnover once electricity generation begins. [1, 2, 3]
