Phnom Penh, 1 September 2026 – The Ministry of Cults and Religion has released official guidance for the organisation of Kan Ben and Pchum Ben, two of Cambodia’s most important Buddhist festivals, taking place from 27 September to 11 October.

Ancient roots, modern relevance

The ministry highlighted that the origins of Pchum Ben are linked to Buddhist scriptures such as the Petavatthu, Vimanavatthu and Vijjadhara. These texts emphasise moral conduct, warning against negligence and wrongdoing that could lead to suffering or undesirable rebirths.

Purpose of the ceremonies

According to the guidelines, the celebrations serve multiple roles:

  • Strengthening solidarity among families and communities.

  • Providing food and necessities to monks during Buddhist Lent.

  • Expressing gratitude to ancestors, parents, teachers and mentors.

  • Reminding people to avoid sinful acts and dedicate merit to deceased relatives.

  • Preserving Cambodia’s Buddhist traditions for future generations.

Social and cultural impact

Beyond their spiritual meaning, Kan Ben and Pchum Ben showcase the abundance of agricultural produce and reinforce Cambodia’s cultural identity. The ministry encouraged citizens to use the occasion to strengthen family bonds, promote social solidarity and uphold values of gratitude and respect.

A national moment

Pchum Ben is widely regarded as one of the country’s most solemn and unifying festivals. With millions expected to participate, the ministry’s guidelines aim to ensure that the ceremonies reflect both religious devotion and cultural heritage, while reminding Cambodians of the moral lessons embedded in Buddhist teaching.
