They agreed to a more than fair price of 700 baht for a man's haircut. If I went into a barbers shop and agreed to pay 3 1/2 times the going rate of 200 baht, I expect to be treated like a king not like a dumb falang that needs to be ripped off.

You can get one in the village for B40, mind you, it looks like the council parks and gardens department has done it!

I’ve experienced this myself once, when I was mugged in a shopping centre in Hua Hin – not 700 but 500 THB. They can only get away with that once; after that, I’ll never go back there again.

The typical responses from the old timers, anything above 50 baht for anything, be it beer, a car wash or a hair cut is a rip off and a scam. And then stand up and tell us how much they pay, like its some kind of medal. Yes 700 is up there, but we have no idea what the shop is like and what services he received, I bet it wasnt a short back and sides from a village barber that it's being compared to though.

The Jordanian should have stood his ground. A rip-off is a rip-off and the Thais can't stop doing it.

700 baht? He was already ripped off before getting any of the other services.

Neither in the article did it mention that the barber had not mentioned the cost of the extras. It might have been mentioned before the cut, or perhaps the barber had a sign up.

But I agree that nothing extra should be done without agreeing on the price first.

I do not have enough information to know if it was a ripoff or not. The barber might have been cheating, and the customer might have been trying to get something for nothing.

And B700 at a higher-end shop would likely not include everything. This is a price list for a nicer shop Bangkok that I used once. I had the "Istanbul Special", it does not include everything, and I did not think it was a ripoff.:

In my neighborhood in Bangkok, the price of a haircut ranges from 150 baht to 2,000 baht or higher (Chalachol). Prices are posted and you can choose where you want to have your hair cut. No surprises. I think the problem in this case isn't the price, it is the behavior of the tourist. Now, if he was an Israeli, I'm sure no one here would be complaining about the price the barber charged. But as he is an Arab, well, say no more.

For that price one can expect more 😜

Especially in a tourist area everyday services are often priced very high.

If no prices are posted you can bet the pricing structure is "If you gotta ask you can't afford it",

Seen a barbers shop in Pattaya with the list in Thai and English.For the farang all the prices were exactly double.

The bill was agreed in advance. So the tourist had the opportunity to turn down the original price if he wished. So I don’t see a scam there.

Whether the addditional work would be chargeable and whether the additional charge was agreed upon in advance, is hard to say. The article isn’t quite clear on that point.

It seems you pay 100 baht for a haircut, but not all haircuts are equal. A short back and side with a set of hair clippers is very different to what a lot of young folk want with sculpting, gel and goodness knows what else. And looking at the photo of the tourist, he has quite a bit of manicured facial hair.

I’m not really seeing the scamming here tbh. It’s more a case of I could get fried rice at the local shop for 70 baht or go to a higher class restaurant and have a meal costing 700 baht.

Poor fella just got charged ฿ 650 to much. Probably because he looked like a Isreali & the local Thai’s want to tar all Israelites with the same brush

One of the few perks for living in Isaan. 50 baht at a place close to me and 60 at the place near my girlfriend's house. Both do touchups areound the neck and ears and good work. Back home last time I needed one and it cost me 300 Baht
