So now Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) has resigned from the U.S. Senate after pleading guilty to soliticing sex in a men's restroom in the Minneapolis airport. Yes, this is the same Larry Craig that has voted consistently for "family values" legislation and has been screwing gay people for years (I guess both literally and figuratively) with his votes against gay marriage, etc.

The question I have, this type of anonymous sex goes on all the time in the USA in public restrooms and in adult theaters...could it happen here in Thailand, where there are ample opportunities for gay people to hook up in other venues that are private and not public?

I don't think so. I think this happens in the USA specifically because of the repressive atmosphere against gays which is still predominant in America. Of course, I don't know about you, but a public restroom in Thailand is the last place I want to tarry. Just curious about what you think.

This bathroom is used for everything except it's intended purpose - there is never a free stall. Silom Complex...these guys spend hours pretending to pee so they can hookup. Totally agree that the most anti--gay "pro-family" right-wing republican politicians in USA...many of them are closet cases. (I mean, there was that rep in Florida and the Colorado preacher just in the past few months.). I do not have a problem with being in or out of the closet...it is a personal choice every gay person has to make according to their own situation. Of course, if you are gay and in the closet, you better not be oppressing the community however.

Having been propositioned while trying to pee at Robinsons in BKK I know it happens. I don't know about you guys, but it's hard to relieve yourself when you have someone hitting on you. This kid kept getting closer and closer until I had to tell him, that the urinal was occupied. I figured his gaydar would have sounded and shrieked abort, uptight hetero alert.

BTW, as much as I dislike the Idaho buffoon, is it not possible, that there was a misunderstanding or that he was entrapped? I don't use public toilets (except to pee) but I think its plausible that his foot could have inadvertently touched the police officer's. That wasn't the issue. The escort he was using was running a prostitution service from Congressman Frank's apartment. What the issue gets down to is the fact that a public restroom is intended for people that need to take a pee or a dump. I believe its very common in Chiang Mai among Thai's, apparently there are many places where gay Thai's go late at night for some Thai on Thai action (especially if they've failed to pull a Farang - always first choice for obvious reasons). Either cruising grounds, or the internet cafe to scour the many Thai gay chat rooms for a "friend". 65 baht for the HIV house is still too expensive for most of them.

I'd heard they've even launched the "Gay" Honda wave especially for Chiang Mai - the fuel gauge always shows empty on Maneenoparaat road ! Well, out here at the Mall Ngamiwang, the toliets on the 6th floor of the building is quite active. Some farang have gone there for sex for quite some time. But, in the last few weeks, security has only been targeting farang who are getting a quicky, but not thai.

As a rather unvirtuous person, I can let you know that this kind of behavior goes on ALL the time and almost everywhere. It is far more common here than it is in Western countries. I know of no malls where you won't find toilet cruising. Some of the upscale ones do monitor the bathrooms more closely than others.

And some gas stations are more active than a gay sauna on Saturday night.

By and large this type of activity is not done by sex workers--other than a few places where they will try to get a customer and go off somewhere. It is generally free.

The police, generally aren't much of a bother in these places--although I would tempt the gods. It's the security guards that you need to worry about. And, as I understand it, but I don't have any first hand knowledge--or second hand for that matter--farangs are often shaken down for a bit of money when they are caught.
