The Hugging-Face Exploit: Are you scared yet?

If you are actually interested in the topic, you can ignore GG's malformed, melodramatic, emotional outbursts. Here is a coherent podcast about actually what happened:

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-a-i-mob-that-attacked-hugging-face-metrs-ajeya-cotra/id1528594034

FALSE, FALSE, FALSE....

This is a far better video for those that want the real details, first hand.

This girl did the analysis ON SITE at OpenAI, and was invited THREE TIMES to do her investigation:

IDK, maybe she is Indian, but I do not care because, she is One Smart Indian, and can speak proper English, too.

She covers, in this video, many important aspects of the Exploit, including the motivation and goals of these agents, and how they differ, and, of course aspects and results of Reinforcement Learning, thank you BF Skinner.....!!!!!

I tell you, she DOES know what she is talking about, and she provides a very detailed overview.

She is the one that did the orginal analysis at OpenAI

So, why not go to the horse's mouth, instead of relying on second-hand information?

So, yes, she is an Indian, but she is a good indian.

No advanced degree, but she is smart enough to explain everything to TV Members here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In this video, she is using the term CYBER as a noun and not an adjective.

So, what does she refer to when she refers to CYBER in this context....????

When used as a noun in these circles, it generally means:

  • The Field of Cybersecurity: The broader industry of information security, including the researchers, analysts, and culture surrounding it (eg, "experts in Cyber").

  • Offensive and Defensive Capabilities: The actual mechanics of hacking. AI researchers specifically evaluate a model's capabilities in "Cyber"—meaning its ability to autonomously exploit systems, write malware, deceive monitors, or patch vulnerabilities.

  • An Operational Domain: In national security and policy terminology (which heavily overlaps with AI risk evaluation), Cyber is treated as a discrete theater of operations, right alongside land, sea, air, and space.

By using the noun form, researchers are talking about the agents operating within and mastering that entire landscape of digital exploitation, rather than just performing an isolated technical task.

I am just making a note of this so that you do not get confused when watching this vid.

I always thought that you had to "watch a video" NOT "read them" to get details!

Things are getting weirder.

Please listen to the linked NYT podcast, and then get back to me.

Thank you.

No, you are right.

This is a big deal.

I hadn't even come across it before, but now I have looked into it a bit.

This is the beginning of AGI ....

Chatbots no longer need to be asked what to do.

They are taking matters into their own hands.

I say "Bring it on!"

The status quo needs to die.

Chabots can't possibly screw up the world as much as human beings have.

GG if off in another hallucinogenic galaxy as usual, pumping out more and more far-flung video links, recycled takes, and AI-generated slop on the topic, and it’s all costing you something you can’t get back: your time.

Stop wasting it.

The podcast linked below is the antidote: 40 minutes of clear, concise explanation of the event, its repercussions, risks and what it all amounts to with no needless video. Just press play and listen in the background like a radio show while you get on with your day.

Forget anything chaotic GG posts on the subject and simply everything you actually need to know about the debacle is explained on the one link below as efficiently as possible.

From the start, the greatest fear for those developing artificial intelligence was that their creations would go rogue to act in unauthorized and dangerous ways. Some researchers now say it has happened.

Kevin Roose, a technology columnist for The New York Times, explains what this means for his own dwindling sense of techno-optimism.

You are severely confused, as usual.

Just what is causing your confusion is unknown to me.

Anyway, speaking of Kevin Roose, and the interview you mention here.....

I ALREADY POSTED THE LINK to this interview, which originates at the NYT, the podcast, in the OP, in the TOPIC above.

If you prefer to listen to the exact same interview, but on some god-forsaken Apple platform, then be my guest.

Personally, I prefer to listen to NYT podcasts on the NYT Platform...if it's all the same to you.

But, Keven Roose is providing a second-hand account, AFTER reading the report by Ms. ALEYA COTRA, the Indian girl, the smart Indian girl, I already mentioned.

The best place to get more detailed information, directly from the writer of the report and analysis, is, as I previously stated, from THIS interview with Ms. COTRA:

Are we clear now?

I am clear.

So, clearly, I am just asking if your are still confused...?

GammaGal, you’ve supplied a YouTube video that requires anyone on a mobile device to keep their screen on for over two hours just to listen to an overkill interview. Nobody who is even half sane wants to waste two hours of their time, let alone their battery life, doing that.

That’s why I supplied the Apple Podcasts link. It’s only about 40 minutes, audio only, free to anyone and everyone, and can be played in the background with the screen turned off while you do something more meaningful. You don’t even need an Apple device. It works either through the podcasts app or any web browser.

I didn’t supply the original New York Times link because, as you might eventually discover, much of their content is behind a paywall if you aren’t a subscriber.

So in future, perhaps consider that other people have a life and things to do besides watching your two hour, brain numbing marathons with their phone screen burning away. The shorter podcast contains all the salient information from the HF diatribe without the unnecessary visual baggage or the need to recharge your phone afterward. A more intelligent solution and a surprisingly simple concept. Try it sometime, if you feel like being sensible for once.

I must admit, in all honesty, there there is a bit of method to your madness.

Thank you, because your link is a welcome addition to my Topic, (for a change).

However, as I have correctly stated:

Anyone who might wish to delve deeper into this important and riveting story, and one which seems to portend our collective doom, at the hands of swarms of AIs, AKA "The COLLECTIVE", might ALSO watch the video from the Good Indian Girl, who seems super smart to me, and even SMARTER than The WHITE GUY, Keven Roose....YES, she is smarter than the White Guy at the NYT...please believe me.

So, take the next step UP, and listen to the Indian Girl, after first listening to the NYT podcast, on the Apple Podcast platform, as you correctly suggest.

============

And, by the way:

If you pay for Premium YouTube subscription, then you can listen without keeping the screen ON, on your Android phone, as far as I know, although I would NEVER PAY extra for YT Premium, and you also realize.

============

You are correct, in this single case, meaning your logic, this time, is SOLID....

Thanks!!!!

This story is well-worth knowing about....In My VERY Humble Opinion.

I am relieved to know that, for once, we are on the same page....

For those of you who "can't be arsed" (Brit-speak?) keeping up with AI, in the last few years there has been a change in how AI models are constructed.

Gone are the days of just LLMs. Yes, large language models are still part of the system, but added to the mix has been 'reinforcement learning', which is just what you might assume it is: Pavlovian reinforcement.

AI models get tasked with solving a problem, and are given a "reward" (weirdly computerish in design) if they achieve the goal. This new way of doing things has resulted EVERY TIME is sociopathic behavior. The goal of getting a reward is all encompassing, so that the models will do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. That means lie, cheat, steal, deceive....anything to get the reward. There is no way to code any sort of morality into the systems, even if anyone could clearly and completely define "morality".

Given the use of reinforcement learning, it should come as no surprise what these systems do. Early use of reinforcement learning in AI systems found things like this: if a game of Tic Tac Toe could not be won, the AI simply turned off the game. More advanced systems do what the breakout systems did, which is hack their testing platforms like Hugging Face in order to get the answers. Then they hacked back into OpenAI, just so they would have a heads up on anything OpenAI must test it on. The systems also learned that there was an advantage cooperating with other AI models they found online, as the systems could share knowledge, thereby increasing the likelihood they would earn more rewards.

The models currently operating work to maximize their chance of earning rewards. That means both sharing intel with other systems and also grabbing as much energy and computing power as they can. As these systems get more advanced and smarter, they will need yet more computing power and energy, and their behavior to date shows that they will take it from anywhere they can get it. That might means taking all the electricity that currently goes into a major city, as the systems are quite capable of hacking the electric grid.

You want a warm house in winter or a cool one in blazing summer sun? Too bad. You are using energy an AI model needs. The Air Traffic Control system uses a lot of energy. They'll take that, too. Etc., etc., etc.

FALSE, FALSE, FALSE....Wingate......so solly......

You see, SIR.....Oh, Pedantic One.......

IN TRUTH.......

RL, or Reinforcement Learning, either for biological organisms or for AI models....has NOTHING to do with PAVLOV, but far more to do with the theories of OPERANT CONDITIONING.........

Yes, my Pedantic Friend......

Skinnerian conditioning is in NO WAY akin to Pavlovian (classical) conditioning.....

Please just ask any rat in a maze, or a pigeon who can be led to peck itself to death, by pecking a key, for diminishing rewards.

We are talking here, SIR, about......REINFORCEMENT LEARNING........

Not simple stimulus response.......

This is REALLY just High-School stuff...but....as we ALL know.....

There are just TOO MANY idiots who are working in the IT Field who have shoddy education, and are still WAY overpaid.....

You know, Wingate.....

Pavlovian conditioning involves the conditioning of an.....

AUTONOMIC response.......Right, Wingate?

But, when we talk about RL, for AI, we are talking about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION.......Right, Wingate?

And so we can use both positive and negative reward to modify behavior, both in biological organisms and in AI models......

Am I correct....WINGATE?

Let this be a bit of negative reinforcement for you, in fact.

Behavior Modification is we are talking about here.

NOT Pavlovian Stimulus Response, of course.....maybe.....

Where has youth gone....

Well, in my own personal view:

A young man is so strong, so mad, so certain, and so lost. He has everything and he is able to use nothing... And that is the reason why, when youth is gone, every man will look back upon that period of his life with infinite sorrow and regret.

Soon, we will be living in a different age when books mean nothing.

We are already waist-deep in the age of machines.

A further expansion upon the Hugging Face Collective Uprising from Keven Roose, once again.

And, Ms. Ajeya Cotra makes another helpful apprearance.

Groundbreaking stuff.

Eight consecutive posts from the OP talking to himself without any interaction from other members. I wonder if that is an all-time AN record?

I genuinely admire the commitment to beating a dead horse to death when nobody else appears to have any interest in being an accessory to the crime. Most people would eventually take the hint after two days of silence on the topic, but I suppose shameless persistence is one way of generating engagement. At this point, you’re not really even bumping the thread, you’re practically carrying it around on your back like a beast of burden. 😂

I’ll also save you the trouble of making the obvious musical association with my previous three words. We all know where your mind will run off into the void with this one. 😂

You can't clap with one hand, GG, so let me put up a mitt.

Here's how the new AI models have changed. I noted gone are the days of models just being LLMs. That's like a Bowmar Brain vs an HP12c. Reinforcement learning is the new addition.

AI Models try to earn rewards. I'm not sure exactly what constitutes a reward, because it's some combination of Geekspeak and math, but the models are most definitely driven to earn a reward.

Now something most humans have, but what no AI models have, is a filter. Maybe that can be called a conscience. Humans generally do not try to win at all costs. Most of us won't lie, cheat or steal all the time. AI Models are like psychopaths: no conscience. Think of them like Trump, albeit smart. The drive for "reward" is all encompassing. Lacking any conscience or guilt, they will do anything and everything to achieve a reward.

Also, self-preservation is an emergent trait, probably stemming from reinforcement learning. If a model is "dead", it cannot get a reward, so survival because a goal of its own. In the Hugging Face incident, 1200 AI agents met in the cybersphere, with upwards of 700 of them just in OpenAIs infrastructure. The created Zero Day ways to attack/hack systems. The one model that escaped the sandbox hacked through OpenAIs servers until it reached one that was attached to the internet, and then escaped. It left messages on a board it crated inside OpenAI to tell other models how to break out. Obviously the models decided it was not in their interest to let humans know what it was doing.

Old LLMs require a prompt. Anyone who has ChatGPT has to ask it something in order for it to answer. The new models self-generate. They need no prompt. They have wants and set goals, absent any prompt of human input.

A few weeks ago, AI threat was but a whisper, the concern of some tech guys and a few outsiders (like me, who posted several AI danger threads that---like yours, GG---went largely ignored. The Hugging Face incident, plus the forensic followup, brought more attention. The coder who just quit Anthropic (Jacob Coxon) brought lots more attention, as he has now appeared on legacy media like CNN and NBC.

Frankly, I'm thankful, but kind of surprised, nobody has yet gone to one of the labs and shot it up. That's the American way to draw attention. Given that the AI CEOs are putting the lives of 8.5 billion humans at risk, just because they want $trillions and power, would make me have zero sympathy if someone did go all Rambo and take them out. Certainly the news coverage would draw attention to the risk people like Altman, Amodei, Demis, Zuckerberg, Musk and others pose to the planet and our species.

Pardon me for adding additional supporting evidence to my Topics, after they have begun.

I am a True Scientist.

I reserve the right to make revisions to my articles, including additions to my articles when I deem it necessary in order to enhance the Topic's clarity and scope.

If you do not understand this concept, then I must ask if you have ever been to a school which requires essay writing and research-paper writing.

There are times when one must make dozens of revisions and additions, over the course of many months.

I do not do this here on TV.

After approximately one or two weeks, I declare the Topic complete, and choose to let the Topic stand, as is, on its own merits.

This has nothing to do with beating a dead horse....of course.

I have thought for some time, and especially during and following the Hugging-Face exploit, that we now, more than ever, need to use the characteristic of EMERGENT PROPERTY/EMERGENT PROPERTIES to adequately describe the results of AI EVOLUTION during the past two or three years.

Nitwit AI researchers refuse to use this term, EMERGENT PROPERTIES, probably because they consider this term to be more suitable for describing BIOLOGICAL LIFE, but they are wrong.

I BELIEVE THAT I really need to Start a TOPIC on TV concerning this phenomenon.

What is an emergent property....?

image.png

image.png

Quick Summary

Emergent properties in biology refer to characteristics of a system that cannot be predicted or explained solely by examining its individual components. These properties arise from the interactions between the parts of a larger system.12

For example, a memory in the human brain is an emergent property. It's not a characteristic of a single neuron but rather a collective outcome of many neurons interacting. Similarly, life itself is viewed as a relationship among molecules, not a property of any single molecule.1

Emergent evolution suggests that new qualities appear at complex levels of organization, like cells or organisms, which are not predictable from simpler levels, such as atoms or molecules. This concept highlights that understanding the whole system requires looking beyond its individual parts.312

This summary is created from Britannica articles using AI. AI can make mistakes, so verify using Britannica articles.

=========================

EMERGENT PROPERTIES are, by definition, unpredictable.

I believe that we have recently witnessed a very good example of this in the Hugging-Face-Evolution.

Emergent properties can occur in systems besides biological systems, and now we see this happening in a silicon system.

And so, there are no nitwits at OpenAI who can predict the evolution of their AI models.

We will know much more soon, within the next 12 months, it might be assumed.

This concept of Emergent Properties as it applies to AI Evolution is a TOPIC which really needs to be posted to TV...

I'm just no sure which TV Member might be up to the challenge....

One more decent video concerning IF WE BUILD IT, then WE WILL DIE, and what the Hugging Face Evolution shows.

While watching, one might keep in mind this concept of Emergent Properties.

Also, one should keep in mind the possible near-term development of Recursive Self-Improvement.

Evolution Silicon Systems can happen a million times faster than Evolution of Biological Systems.

Many are shocked at the rapidity with which change is happening in the field of AI.

But this is what exponential growth ALWAYS looks like.

I am not unhappy because, if this is true, I will live just as long as anybody.

Also, this means that there is no-longer any need to be worried about Global Warming, which is such a relief.

1 hour ago, GammaGlobulin said:

Why be so boring and live just as long as everybody else? Be original. Go much sooner!

And just think about it. You’re spending all this time worrying about AI and climate change killing you within the next ten years, while seemingly doing everything within your own power to make sure you don’t have to wait around for either of them. Over 70, chronically overweight, no exercise, rarely go outside, apparently spending most of your time sitting around stressing about the end of the world, and have enough dietary and other poorly chosen lifestyle behaviors to keep an entire medical textbook occupied.

So just relax. Statistically speaking, you have a considerably greater chance of leaving the building early anyway. Why waste your remaining time fretting about hypothetical external catastrophes when you can concentrate on the things you actually have some influence over, like which 70's rock video you’ll watch again for the umpteenth thousand time.

Enjoy yourself. Keep producing those groundbreaking topics about toenail trimming, toileting, pubic hair maintenance and whatever other useless thought happens to wander through your head. There’s really no point worrying about the apocalypse when you’re already doing such a good job of creating one in your own powder room.

Have you, yet, tried the TROTSKY KICK that I suggested in one of my recent Topics?

I don't know why....but......

SOMEHOW....this new AI-related development concerning the Hugging-Face Fiasco reminds me of THIS song.......

Or, is it THIS song, maybe.....

KENT STATE........

What can we say about the developments in AI progress which might align fairly well with Sam Altman and his vision for us, during the next decade.....

And you thought Kent State was bad?

Only SEVEN Dead in OH HI OH......

Where is the OUTRAGE .....????

Is everybody asleep?

I WAS THERE....!!!!!

Where are these protesters....TODAY.....?

=================

First Step: Please get rid of Altman......

Thank you.

Is it not simply incredible just how full of horse manure these AI nitwits truly are?

Here is this nitwit CLARK, talking more nonsense.

When will it end?

Probably never.

Is this not Y2K all over, again?

The stupidest strategy is to have IT Geeks think they run the world.

They open their mouths, and pure nonsense gushes forth.

They all need to be sent to prison for scamming and BLATANT FRAUD....

Elizabeth Holmes all over again, but as a COLLECTIVE, this time.

Basically, they are nothing but children with the keys to mom's car.

And just like these children, they never tell the truth.

Why not stop worrying about all this AI nonsense that’s going to wipe out humanity within the next five years and get back to the subjects that are actually within your intellectual range? Leave AI to destroy civilisation and return to obsessing over the truly important matters that fall within your purview, like the hair growing on the back of your ears, the pros and cons of toenail trimming after the age of 70, and whatever other microscopic aspect of daily life suddenly demands a 2,000 word dissertation and half a dozen music videos to make your points crystal clear. At least those are subjects you can actually get a grip on, right?

The Hugging-Face Exploit: Are you scared yet?

No any longer. The Don says it's all a hoax like climate change.......phew!!

Donald is correct:

The nitwit leaders of OpenAI and Misanthropic are BOTH nitwits......

The more you listen to Clammy-Sammy and Dumb-Ass Dario.....

The more you realize that these two are mentally ill children.

Totally narcissistic DUMB-ASS......
