agree...some serious mental issues going on ....another sad case of someone who never learned if it sounds too good to be true it probaly isn't true...as for scams if it quacks like a duck it is probably a duck.....while i think this man has obviously lost his marbles it is amazing how so many semi young semmingly people all over the world fall for scams everyday...some involve romance some just $$, some crypto, some ponzi schemes....there is a scam for every occasion.

yes they are...and they work hard at it ...they play the numbers if you put some ridiculos offer like send me 10000 in crypto as i have 30 million in frozen funds that i will split with you but i need 10 k to get it released type offer...put in front of enough people and you will soon find an amazing number who will send you the $$...if it didn't work they would have quit doing it long ago...and yes thai gals have their own version of "offers" that involves sex and sick buffalos that a high percentage of expats seem to fall for every day....

The article quite clearly states his state pension was about £500 per month not that he was sending £500 per month. "Hill, from Luton, had lived in Thailand for 11 years after retiring from his work as a UN flight operator. He had been living on a state pension of about GBP500 a month when he was contacted on Facebook by someone calling herself Emily Smith."

When I was living in Penang I would get localized spam when using the internet. There would be stuff like "These hot ladies in Bukit Tanjung (a 2-horse town nearby) are waiting to hear from you!" accompanied by pics of Russian hookers. Can't image how anyone other than a teenager could fall for that.

We can only speculate, but 57 would be too young a retirement age indeed. One possible scenario is he was an English teacher for nine years (or he lived frugally on savings during that time), then he got an incomplete pension of £500. Maybe a house was sold before he left the UK and he initially had a couple of hundred grand or so in the bank.

In any case, it's a sad story.

Surely! he had millions. You are funny. Maybe he had a couple of thousands.

Mistake number one was getting involved too quickly. Have some fun but really, really take your time. Many Thai women are very clever at making it appear that they really care for "their guy". And on many occasions, that is true, especially in long term relationships. But, for short time gals, it is just a game, and they play it well. Many Western men who come here are emotionally vulnerable, or an emotional wreck, having endured years of near torture by uber-feminists.

My advice would be to take your time. Don't move fast, don't move in with her, don't live with her, date her for 6 months to a year and see how you like her. Time is required to really get to know somebody and once you face some adversity together, once you see her many times under many different occasions, you really start to get a sense of who she is and whether or not she is somebody who has the kind of emotional development that would make her worthy of investing your own time into her. She will likely push back as a lot of Thai women like to step up the timetable, you are then required to push back and set the ground rules. If she's not okay with that, you just let her walk.

And always remember every woman has a story, some of them are real most of them are not, and a lot of these women are coached by women who are very skillful in telling a man what he wants to hear.

If you're dealing with a middle class woman from a stable family or from a woman from a wealthy family, it's a very different story. But most of the women we are exposed to come from families that are not well established, and families that are not financially secure, and this is a survival game for them.

Be kind to yourself and take your time.

Maybe he had been living on some lump-sum retirement payoff (+ occupational pension?) from his job as a UN flight operator, which had presumably sustained him comfortably and legitimately in Thailand prior to this ill-fated romantic encounter.
