This sounds more like a classic advance payment/advance fee ("Nigerian prince") scam than just a romance scam. From the (sparse) description, it sounds as though he was motivated at least as much by the prospect of receiving a share of the "inheritance" as by a desire to help his beloved.

I'm unsure what a "UN Flight Operator" is, but it sounds like a job that requires some intelligence.

I assume the 500 a month wasn't all he had upon retirement, nearly everyone has savings or assets of some kind when finishing work.

Again assuming, he had sufficient brain power to organise emigration and the visa complexities and fund requirements for some years of his stay. That history doesn't indicate someone likely to throw everything away on an obvious scam.

Perhaps loneliness led him to a permanent spot on a bar stool, and the effects of that lifestyle accelerated brain decline. to the point where he needed permanent care by state or relatives. Things lacking for many pensioners here.

Along came the Nigerians with a pretty picture.

There is a percentage of the world's population this day these days that absolutely refuse to work for a living, and simply like to reach into the pockets of others. They are vampires, they are bloodsuckers, and we must use every ounce of our power to avoid getting sucked into their scams.

Never ever send money to somebody that you don't know, and the best way to proceed here in Thailand with a relationship is to really take your time getting to know somebody, getting to know her family, where she comes from, how they think, and what their hearts are made of, to determine whether or not they're worthy of your devotion.

Best comment on here. There are 1000s of cases of scams targeting the elderly, and they lose so much because they want to believe the good in others. For so many, this is a much different time. Kudos to all those who helped him.

I’m 5 years older than this guy - he can’t blame age, he’s just thick and ignorant. Being from Luton probably explains a lot about his (lack of) intelligence. Now he’s just another burden on the UK state…or my taxes I pay there. Save up a few £ mate and book a one way ticket to Switzerland…. 😱

Full state pension if you hit 67 (like man in OP) in 2024 was 225 pounds a week.

New state pension (2015+) is far more than Old state pension (2015-)

The article says he overstayed his visa. A visa is what you obtain outside Thailand in order to enter the country.

Some pretty heartless comments on here. Elderly people get scammed all the time. They are the primary target of many criminals. He may be somewhere on the dementia scale, and that's how he ended up giving 'her' all his pension each month. Now he's being deported to the UK where he might be homeless again after many years of living away from there. I do wonder about living in Thailand for 11 years after working for the UN. Wouldn't he have some pension from them?

Frozen Pensions are Immoral, mine was frozen 1n 2012 at £418 and still the same amount. The British govenment is to blame for hardship of many pensioners in Thailland, most don't be know before it happens. There so much on line about it, so the majority understand. His case being scammed with the oldest scam i've heard of, I was getting these emails 30 years ago before FB, but FB is not a platform to be trusted on money matters so many scams. He obviously has lived a shelter life to fall for that scam, but many have thats why they are still doing it.
