These recurring questions, especially in polarized threads or threads that automatically become polarized, are interesting because they expose the double morality in some of the replies. We rightly condemn what was done to Jews throughout history and understand why they needed protection, yet some seem remarkably willing to accept Palestinians continuing to suffer today.

Human rights do not change depending on whose side you are on. You cannot defend the rights of people who were once persecuted while ignoring the rights of another population when they are the ones suffering.

Do you know the surname of the German president? Is he brave or not? Frankly, nobody cares, simply because he has no more power than a notary public.

Under the Russian Constitution, the Russian president also has no more power than a notary public. Yet, regardless of the office he holds—whether president, prime minister, or anything else—everyone knows that this is the man who heads the state.

Nevertheless, a lack of powers explicitly defined by law still ties one's hands significantly. We have yet to fully move past this legacy of the Gorbachev era.
