Pitbull Dogs: A Special Report:

Who Is Really to Blame?

Pitbull dogs are one of the most intelligent breeds; however, that is where the resemblance to other dog breeds ends.

This breed is not like the rest. Pitbulls have had a very bad reputation mainly because they have an inbuilt aggressive and very active temperamental spirit.

Pitbulls are banned for keeping as pets in many parts of Europe. The UK has strict guidelines for forced muzzling of the dog in public, due to a large number of fatal attacks on other dogs and children.

In Pattaya, the latest victim was Mr. Ossi Viljanen’s pet dog Toto, who died from severe bites by an American Pitbull belonging to a German neighbor of Mr. Viljanen from Finland. The incident happened in Chok Chai Garden Homes.

The police were called to make a report and the owner of the pitbull agreed to pay 10,000 baht the next day. However, the owner did not turn up at the designated time but came later that day. Since then, Mr. Viljanen has organized a meeting with fellow neighbors with a petition about the dangerous dog still wandering the neighborhood unattended.

To get a balanced report, we spoke to an American Pitbull owner, a member of the Sawang Boriboon South Pattaya Rescue Unit. He stated “American pitbulls are a fierce dog and they bite extremely hard. They have a locking mechanism in their jaw.

But these animals are also very friendly if they are trained the right way. I have had my dog for five years and she has never bitten any human being. People should not blame the dog for its actions but blame the owners; it’s their responsibility. I think any dog without registration or a collar should be taken off the street.”

Understand that these unique dogs are a breed apart; it is like owning a tiger as a pet, cute to look at but fierce by nature and extremely dangerous. Furthermore, why should we blame Pitbulls for our own cruelty? Think twice and face the truth before you accept responsibility for owning one of these potentially dangerous and restricted breed of dogs.

I like dogs. I have 3 of my own: a Chihuahua and two mini-Pincher.

After hearing so many horror stories of pittbull attacking people, I still don't see it why these vicious dogs are still raised as a household pet.

Remember the story about the pittbull mauled its owner while she was sleeping. It happened last year to the French lady. The doctores had to reconstructed her whole new face, in which took it from a lady who died from accident.

Seen her pictures last week, she is on the road to gain a normal human face about 75%. She said..." At least I can walk on the street and look normal."

If someone's pitbull killed one of my loving dogs, I'm afraid that there would be one dead pitbull and one pitbull owner in the hospital with many broken bones.

This is totally unacceptable. For many of us, our dogs are like our children and the horror of having a family member killed would be more than some of us could handle/accept.

On the one hand, it seems like there are some nice pitbulls. Equally though, it seems like they can flip out without notice. My vote would be to stop the breed and start again with a more relaxed species...

... my two baht's worth anyway. :-)

I tend to agree with you regarding the dog - if it was my dog and the pitbull was wandering the estate it would have a nice piece of tainted meat left out for it.

What else shall we ban at the same time as Pit bulls?

Tobacco?

Alcohol?

Motor Bikes?

Fast Cars?

All Cars?

McDonalds?

Ice Cream?

I have seen studies proving that all the above can be deadly.

Cheers

Control not ban - all of the above had controls in most civilised societies last time I looked.

Then again all of the above are inanimate and do not have minds of their own ;-) - it takes somebody using them to make them dangerous or can you not quite get the nuance?

How about a pet tiger roaming the estate then?

One of my best mates from high school has owned pit bulls ever since he was in college. As many as three or four at one time, and he has never once had a dog bite a person, or another dog. He is now a father of two and even with babies in the house he still maintained ownership of pit bulls – right now he has two.

Most of his dogs have not only be free of biting others but very friendly, outgoing animals, and typical very passive when confronted by a human (adult or child) or another dog. His dogs have encountered untold amount of abuse from various neighbors over the year (due to fear and ignorance) and yet still never bitten anyone.

The violence by this breed has much more to due with how they are raised than in inherent violent tendencies. If enough rules and regulations are passed to eventually extinguish this breed, another breed will take it’s place soon enough. There are plenty of whack-jobs out there that breed violence into their animals removing the pit bull breed as an option for them won’t really make much of a difference.

You really can not see all have controls?

License to drive and various traffic laws

Restrictions on alcohol and tobacco sale

Food safety laws

Are you blind?

So food safety laws stops who buying a big mac or 10.

It would be (word removed so as not to cause offense) to start swapping insults.

Regardless the point is cars kill more people than dogs of all breeds.

Heart disease kills more people than cars.

Does anybody fancy trying to defend alcohol or tobacco?

So lets ban them all and live a banal but safe life.

As for your question about a Tiger, some people do live where there are tigers and guess what, its the tigers that are protected.

Take no chances, get one of these ,.I find its the owners in most cases that are the cause, however when was the last time you heard of a boxer or a labrador killing someone,, i want a pet that the kids can pet with out fear,.not a potential killer,.

I couldn't have explained the "problem with" pitbulls and similar breeds better, and that not all the dogs of a certain breed are bad. :o

It's funny how you never hear in the media about a pomeranian, cute lap dogs, labs or other so called "friendly" breeds attack. :D

I'm of the opinion THAT ALL DOGS - large/small/all breeds - have the potential to be considered dangerous given certain circumstances/conditions and to cause injuries, fatalities or be a menace and nuisance to society.

ANY DOG OWNERs who let their dogs roam wild ARE irresponsible owners and should be made accountable for their dogs actions. Maybe if owners are dealt with harshly (severe penalties) instead of a slap on the wrist/verbal warning they would change their attitudes and realise that dog ownership is a huge responsibilty and one that should not be taken lightly.

Total control over their dogs REGARDLESS OF BREED should be strictly enforced - be it:

  • keeping it on leashes (restrained) when walking out in public,
  • keeping their dogs from roaming free by having property fencing,
  • dog obedience training/socialisation, etc,
  • knowledgeable of their breeds natural instincts, strength, temperament and body language and BEING ABLE to handle or be prepared on how to deal with potential problems.

Unless more owners take control and be responsible for their dogs actions (blaming dogs/breeds won't stop anything) - dog attacks and fatalities will continue. :D

There will always be people that will defend the breed and that have or have had good dogs, unfortunatly the owners in most countries arent vetted and the dog can get into the wrong hands which can be fatal, we have all seen the guy covered in tattos and walking one of these breeds, you just know he had it as he is a coward or wants to terrorise people, i saw a pick up the other day, harley davidson sticker in the window with a rottweiler in the back about to dehydrate,it was totally freaked out with the heat, the owner was arm out the window trying to look cool, im not violent usually but i wanted to knock him out and take the dog, i felt really angry, this is the type of owner causing these breed related problems, until they have been banned ( this type of owner ) the dogs will continue to bring fear,. Please explain what you suggest.

Why should I make the rules up - muzzling in public would be a good start I suppose

Not letting them roam free outside their compound which must be secure

What do you suggest - no rules at all - bit of a libertarian are we?

Just today in the Uk a grandmother was aquited of negligence re. allowing a pit bull to savage and kill her baby/toddler grand daughter. The dog belonged to her tracksuit and baseball hat wearing, unemployed low life son. The dog ripped of the little girls face. Although the dog had attacked people in the past it had never turned on its family - not that the dog understood the little girl was family :o

I thought they were banned in the UK? - is this not so?

I thought the owner of this dog got jail for owning a banned breed earlier this year?

if you had one before the ban it didnt apply, its a loophole, and as yet i havent seen anyone prosecuted, im not sure about this particular case to be honest but there was a big hoo hah a few months ago when they found these dogs bred for badger fighting in the westcountry and talked of an outright ban, .you cant beleive the things some people do can you,

I just dont get it.....

Pitbulls generally are cool if raised properly ....But they are known for animal aggression and the fact they will attack when threatened/jealous .

Personally i feel its like keeping an old artillery shell you found on the beach on your mantlepiece ,should be fine but......

so why take the risk.

My neighbor has one and its lovely currently im more scared of the jack russel opposite.
