Do you have any idea how much does a beach boy earn in South Thailand, such as Krabi? Are there much difference between the job for the boat, bar or restaurant?

I've never been far south, but if it's like the unskilled jobs performed by young men here (with no more than matayom 3 education), they might earn as little as 4000 baht per month, or as much as 8000. Just guessing, but I know experienced managers who don't make 8000.

I am not sure about working on boats but the guys I have talked to who work in restaurants and bars make between 3-10000 (10000 being very rare) a month. This all depends on tips, if they drink for free, if "room" and food is included and it depends on the season. I am talking about employees not owners But I would say about an average of 4-5000 a month. In the Krabi area anyway. Can't say for the rest of the South.

I agree with PeaceBlondie many jobs are pretty lowly paid. My regular massage dude here in Bangkok (no smart comments) finished high school. He earns 7,000 baht per month working six days a week, 10 hour days.

the boys that work for me earn between 5000-12000b a month plus tips ,to get top end money they have to have worked for a few years with me ,i pay well and some of my staff have worked for me for over ten years ,a couple own cars and one owns his own home (via mortgage) .........

Depends wherabouts in Thailand you are, Phuket will be the highest wage.

Guys who work the boats will be of two kinds, ones who own the boat and ones who work for the owner.

Those who work for the owner will get paid a low wage plus a %, those who own the boat, obviously keep the money (I am assuming we are talking about long-tail taxi boats). What they earn will depend on how many customers they get and the prices they charge for the boat.

I realise I'm being really nosey here, but why are you asking about their salaries?

His present wage is 10,000 per month + Company new truck every 2 years [his present truck is 1year old last month and has 121,000km so far !!!

On top of the 10,000 per month is .5% commission but only paid if the Target sales are reached…. He NEVER earns more than 18,000 baht per month, then there is tax etc to be taken off………..

Make one wonder why Immigration wants us to have [800,000 deposit] or 65,000 baht per month, myself have NEVER in 5 years spent more that 15,000 baht per month, [Jan 2006 – Jan 2007 total spend was 143,000 baht] so far this year to date spent 94,000… Own a detached house, car, 150+ fish, and 3 dogs.

If you spend 15000 baht per month, how can a man feed the whole family with only 4-5000 baht?

Maybe they dont have a car, a house, 150 fish and 3 dogs?

All the Thais that are married I know both work + most have other family living with them, or live with family….

Very good Thai friends across the road in my Village, same size house as mine, Father, Mother and child + Brother his wife and child all live there, All 4 work while the kids are at school…..

My monthly water bill is around 280 baht month…….. theirs is 140 baht !!!

- - electric - - - 1,800 - - …….. - never over 1,100 baht !!!

Next door is the same Father Mother and Auntie all work + have 2 kids + granddad + a Burmese Maid, same for elec, but 180 for water

I never use the air con, but both the above use !!!!

So somehow Thais live a lot cheaper…….. these are just 2 households + NOT the unskilled workers class

While the money factor may come into the equation for some, I'm sure the attraction has more to do with the white skin than the money. Thais seem to value whiteness more than $!!

I am sorry, I don't want to offend anyone here, I totally believe that there are lots of the boys are attracted by the westerns white skin.

The lowest end, base salary for a Thai boat captain is about 7,000 Baht. A boat boy about 4,000 Baht. This excludes tips they may earn on board. Tips usually end up being substantially higher than their base salaries per month.

A Thai boat captain/ boat boy who have years of experience and skills command at least double the above.

Don't forget Thais eat very simply and their daily sustenance doesn't cost much. Imagine if they eat their own catch while working on boats; a pot of curry can go around from breakfast till supper with rice.

And if they work on board, there's hardly any chance they can spend it until low season hits. 6 months of savings can be substantial enough for a Thai to set up a house on land.

Don’t forget the money that they get sent….just like the working girls.

Many of the beach boy’s are on the game so to speak…………especially with The Japanese Girls

Depends on the guy, terryp. Most of the guys who run the boats on my island are not "on the game" whereas most of the guys who work in the bars are.

Anyway, sin sot, or the money paid upon marriage is based on the economic status of both families. Poor families only get major sin sot from people willing to pay--most couples go into marriage realizing that, at least with poor families, the sin sot will be quite low. Also, at least where I live, it is not considered likely that a Thai guy will marry a foreign girl because he can't get a Thai girl. Most local girls do not marry farang, some do but most do not.

I think many people on low wages are better at saving. My friend saves as much as I do and I earn many times more than he does. On less than 8000 baht per month he saved enough in the past few years to purchase a good second-hand pickup for his parents farm.

my friend looked for restaurant, hotel, and bar jobs in ao nang (krabi)... he ended up getting a bar job (at irish rover pub) that paid 6000b a month, but that was the best he could find, even with years of experience. the other jobs all paid in the range of 4000b. he had to pay his own rent too!

p.s. i agree that most (though not all) the thai guys who are "working" in bars choose farang girlfriends primarily because they will then have a nice place to stay, drinks bought for them every night, and possibly will be taken travelling. and of course there is the sex. most of them here say they don't like farang girls better than thai girls, there are just very few thai girls around! (they leave to go to uni elsewhere)... i would say the speedboat guys are "on the game" as well, but the longtail boat guys are hardworking and usually do not even associate with farangs. by the way here in phangan the bar guys make 4000-10000b/mo.

I don't see the difference between speedboat guy and longtail boat guy, both of them are in the tourism, contact with female tourists all the days. Is there anyone who can tell the reason why the longtail boat guy is hardworking but the speedboat guy is "on the game"?

well i mean "on the game" as far as speaking english, memorizing chat up lines, and trying to get with foreign chicks.

longtail guys work all day, going back and forth, basically running a taxi service. Most (but not all) own their own boats. Most (but not all) are local and married to local girls. Nothing gets around a small community like playing around, especially with a farang girl.

Speedboat guys don't run all day, just occasionally. Lots of time to sit around and hit on girls. Most are working for the owner of the boat and may not be local.

I ran into a Thai girl in a park last week, she told me that she was just dumped by her farang boy friend who is the chief representative of SONY Entertainment in Thailand. That guy owns a $2 million villa in pattaya.

I asked her why don't find a local bf, she replied frankly, the local boy is too poor for her, she bought a big house with mortage, she has big financial pressure, she need some one rich enough, so that why she prefers farangs. So I asked her why she buy such a big house, she replied that it is all for her mother, she want to her mother live in some decent place.

I feel very sympathetic for her, she cares so much about her family. and I feel very guilty too, because i never think buying a house for my mother!

We kept talking, i asked her what she is going to do , she told me that a friend of her ex-bf, also a farang, ask her to sleep with him, and will give her 10000 baht, and she was going to meet him that night, not only for the money but also for the revenge to her ex-bf.

My sympathism suddenly disapper......
