Hi all,

I am new to this Forum, however not new to Thailand or the topic.

Growing older, my plans are to get a dairy farm(10 - 20 cattle) started here with the family of my missus

Family lives near Khon Kaen, east of there

Can anybody tell me whether this location is suitable at all in view of Milk Colection points ?

Where can I obtain a list of such points in order to choose a vantage point ?

Any other helpful hints, warnings etc would be appreciated in order to get going

If any other expats or english speaking locals have presently such a farm I would be delighted to share ideas and pay a visit, if I may.

pls post to this thread or contact me on PM

thanks a lot and maybe these coming infos are interesting for some other newcomers or "Oldies"

Hi Seppl

If you are serious, your present location isn't workable; would you be prepared to relocate the wifes family to Korat?

The Pakchong area of Korat being the best area for Dairy / milk production; this is the home of the famous Chok-chai farms, the biggest milk producer, also there are hundreds of smaller-10-20-30 milker units in this area; all making money! K.K isn't anywhere near as good or workable! I am an ex-dairy/beef farmer from the UK; having lived full time in Thailand for near 12 years now. Pakchong area has the benefit of stunning countryside / scenery / views, not unlike C.M or C.R, without the flooding! If you want to discuss, PM me.

:o thanks. Near Khon Kaen, respectively Kranuan ther is a kind of Dairy Farm Industry as well originated by Thailand's King in the early 90's

there are even a few farms having up to 100 heads

Pak Chong is nice and beautiful and I have been there a few times.

Relocation no problem as long as it is feasable

yeah I read a few before posting here

tried to contact them as well, but in vain

as I could see from other posts others have tried as well

Hi all, sorry have'nt been online much. I've just got internet broadband so mabyeI'll be on a bit more.

Ok first is is there anywhere you can sell the milk?

The biggest thing with Dairy is forage, you have to have a good supply of good quality forage, it really cuts into your profits if you have to buy it so you need the land to grow your own. For 10-20 head you'll probaly need 10-20 rai. If done right it can be very profitable, looking back to when we had the farm the biggest profits came when we got the forage right, basicaly with good home grown forage your yield go's up and your costs go down. There's loads writen here on forage

Transport costs to and from the dairy add up as well if they don't collect, who's going to be doing the actual work, if you're just looking for something to run it's self then it probaly wont work.

Have you any experiance in buying cattle ? Generaly don't buy anything if it's not pregnant and get the pregnancy checked by a vet, personaly I'd go for cattle up to their 4-5 pregnancy, they generaly are at thier prime about the 4th. If you can quarrentine any new cattle and get a blood check done on them before mixing with the herd.

There's quite a few small scale dairy farms in the area north of Muak Lek, km 142-143 on the hightway to Pak Chong and Korat.  Particularly up hwy 2273 some 20-30 km.  I pass them once a week or so and heading up there again later this morning, got a bungalow at a small resort in the area.  Several bulk milk tank farms, if that's the correct term, in the area.

Drive up (down?) one day and talk to a number of the people in the business to get an idea of the economics involved.  A number of not expensive resorts in the area to stay at.

FYI, Muak Lek is where the ol' Danish supported dairy is located.  Remember the LARGE white milk bottle there on the side of the highway some years ago?

Hi Seppl, Sorry my pm came through as a blank?????......Not been on line for a week or two. PM me again if still keen. As a matter of interest I see several places in Pakchong advertised on bahtsold.com ; one of which being described as ideal for a dairy farm!

I'm not a cow farmer but I'd like to offer two things...first is that if you are getting older and you are thinking that this dairy operation will provide your retirement income I think you should look at it very carefully to see if infact it will provide the security and income that you will need....and second RamdomChances mentions that to make money you need to produce your own forage...and...I am a farmer and I can assure you that the key to good forage is having plenty of water YEAR ROUND for your forage crops...or some way to store forage (hay or silage) through the dry season.

thanks for the opinion and I take this into consideration. that's why I posted this.

all these aspects and others go into my planning (which I am doing quite a while) and I am in no way in a hurry.

Thanks again Seppl :o
