scratt Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Hi there, Been living in Bangkok (well Muang Thong Thani actuallly) since the beginning of the year and have really only done downtown Bangkok with the multitude of familly visiting us now they know they have a base in Thailand!!! ;-) On Thursday night my Father wants to go to a nice restaurant to say thanks for us hosting them here and he wants to do it somewher downtown.. He has even mentioned 'credit card' and 'meal' in the same sentence! I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good downtown restaurant which is not gonna be exhorbitant but a reasonable price, good food (Thai of course) but that can cater to my little sister who is a bit picky and prefers fairly plain stuff..... If there is an upmarket version of the great little out door places that do the BBQ over a charcoal grill that would be fab... Thanks for any help / suggestions. They are gonna be staying near Baiyoke. Secondly, myself and my other half really like to go to a good Trance / Techno / House rave from time to time.. and are obviously not wanting to land ourselves in trouble the first time we venture out downtown... Is there anywhere for this kind of scene that is safe and doesn't have all the crass loonies running around obviously off their faces trying to get put in the Bangkok Hilton for the rest of their lives... We are mature ravers (mid 30s) so would prefer a more subtle crowd... or should we be looking to the provinces and beaches at the end of the year... Cheers for any help... scratt
The Gentleman Scamp Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Cabbages & Condoms, Sukhamvit Soi 12. Don't be fooled by the name, it's actually a very nice and upmarket place in a beautiful setting, especially at night. It does very good quality Thai food and isn't too expensive and you get condoms instead of mints with the bill. If you think I'm pulling your plonker then take a look at the websight. I can't post up a link because I'm useless but somebody will no doubt read this and do it for me, if not, just type the name into a search engine such as Ask Jeeves or Google. Bon appitite! Scamp.

Good luck and enjoy yourselves

NoAjarn Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 A Restaurant with a Mission: Cabbages and Condoms, Bangkok By Kit Snedaker A free vasectomy from the clinic next door is one of the perks for males dining at Bangkok’s Cabbages and Condoms. All diners get a condom with coffee, instead of an after-dinner mint because C&C is the only restaurant in the world dedicated to birth control. Luckily, it also serves delicious and innovative Thai food. Spicy Condom Salad, for example–fried Shanghai noodles spiced with herbs. In the adjoining gift shop, bouquets of condoms, looking disconcertingly like bunches of Black-eyed Susans, stand in vases next to silver bracelets, vests and other handcrafts made by villagers. Piles of T-shirts are emblazoned with the message, "Cabbages and Condoms, Our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy." Proceeds from the sale of these items and the restaurant’s meals are given to the Population and Community Development Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1974 by Mechai Viravaidya, the former Thai Minister of Health. Viravaidya, whose Scottish father and Thai mother sent him to Australia to be educated, is Thailand’s leading philanthropist. His non-profit association backs birth control, environmental conservation, rural development and AIDS awareness. Although Viravaidya has held four cabinet posts in the government, his champion cause continues to be birth control. To this end, he wants to make condoms as common--and as accepted--as cabbages. He has passed them out to surprised bankers and CEOs at sober World Bank meetings and paid farmers to paint ads and public service announcements for condoms on the sides of their water buffalo. Thanks in part to his effort, Thailand’s birth rate has dropped below 1 percent a year. Cabbages and Condoms is only one of his many attempts to make birth control a popular and populist message in Thailand. And business at the bustling downtown eatery is excellent. It’s been consistently rated one of the best restaurants in Bangkok. So far, however, there’s no rating--good or bad--for the vasectomies next door.

Darlek Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Poor bugger, living in Muang Thong Thani. I suppose its handy for seeing concerts though it must be like living in Timbuktoo. how does he get in and out of the place ? taxis run in horror when you mention the name ! imagine trying to get there when they open the new airport , it could take weeks
Insight Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 I'm heavily into my techno / trance (cheese free) - the best deal in Bangers I reckon is Lucifers, Patpong. Occasionally some naff "Eurodance", but the majority of tunes are decent enough. Obviously, don't expect Van Dyk / Oakenfold / Tiesto standard, but it ain't bad... Also, IMHO, it doesn't have the pretentious (and pointless) element of Q-Bar, Bed Supper and Mystique - prices are reasonable also. Yes, it is full of bar slappers, but UK clubs are full of, well, slappers! No intimidating atmosphere by any means if you’re with a couple.
appleman_thai Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Soi 23 on Sukhumvit has some great restaurants..... Baan Khanita (thai) and CONFUSION (fusion). http://www.thaiconfusion.com Central location and only a stroll away from Narcissus and also FAITH clubs. I live out in Laksi so I know what you are going thru.......
