No limo theft charges for players

Two former England footballers will not be charged over the taking of a luxury private cab they admitted driving off in on a night out, police have said.

Rob Lee, 38, and Warren Barton, 41, were arrested in July after the Mercedes E220 saloon was taken from Hackney Road, east London.

The former Newcastle United stars admitted they drove off in the car when the owner stepped out of the vehicle.

They then allegedly crashed it into a van and fled the scene.

The car was found abandoned on Hackney Road.

Officers said the owner of the car did not want to press any charges against the pair over the taking of the car.

The ex-footballers were told this before they were due to answer bail on Tuesday.

Lee, from West Ham, east London, played for Newcastle United for 10 years and was capped for his country 21 times.

Barton, born in Stoke Newington, played for the Magpies between 1995 and 2002, and played for England three times

What can you say about these two plonkers? They have to be up there with Glen Johnson and his shop lifting incident in B&Q for complete stupidity.

You are spot on. What a tool Johnson is :o

I suppose we should also include the time when he missed out playing against Barcelona because he forgot his passport.

I am not surprised that the case was not pursued. Warren Barton, a footballer???? You have got to be kidding! Should be done for impersonating a footballer all those years ago.

Yet again high profile footballers do something stupid and illegal get away with it :o

What sort of example does this send out to youngsters? Especially ones who look up to footballers.

About time they stopped this 'one law for them and another for us'.

I appreciate the owner did not want to press charges but in these situations you would think the law would be able to prosecute and set an example.

not all of them get away with it (Lee Hughes ,& the stoke player just released) but agreed alot seem to get away with what us mere mortals couldn't :o

Which illegal activity would you most like to engage in if you were above the letter of the law, Mr. Chavy?

I'm not above the letter of the law (except behind my front door) but I'll give it some thought & let you know. Maybe assassination to start with :o

On this forum, or as a club as a whole? :D

I've not had the pleasure of meeting Sunderland just yet, I didn't stick around long enough at the footy & beer night last time out. :D I'm hoping for a longer attendance on the next one :D
