Hi, I have the TOT goldcyber line 1meg down for THB, 1,000 per month....for the last 6 months it has got worse and worse....maybe 2 years ago I would get 700 or 800 kps now I am only getting 150 kps.....this really sucks....I stay at Na Jomitine near the yat club......is anyone else getting such a bad connectoin??? what can I do?? i have complain a milion times and nothing is done.....on www.adslthailand.com when test in thailand I get 700 or 800 but on www.speakeasey.com/speedtest, or www.speedtest.com to the USA is 150 max is 250......this reallly sucks can not even use my VOIP phone with out it breaking up so I think the speed is dropping below 100kps.....

I'm in Jomtien too and got the same deal from TOT just after they started providing broadband.Right from the outset I was very disappointed. It wasn't all that much better to what I had had previously and didn't start to compare with the broadband I had from BT back in the UK.

I complained about it to anybody that would listen to me but for various reasons never got around to getting the TOT people out to check it.

Then about a month ago I had a computer problem - the monitor wasn't getting a signal -so I took the computer to Wattana in Pattaya Klang. Usually they fix my problems the same day or at worst, the next. This time the computer was with them 4 days and every time I looked in when I was passing, there was an engineer actually working at it. Finally he told me that he had found a faulty part and would replace it and reinstall Windows.

When I got the computer back and went on-line again I was amazed. It flew like a bird. It was a total transformation. (I'm writing this with fingers crossed and touching wood, etc.) Now I'm getting speeds practically as good as in the UK. I can't believe it and no longer begrudge the 1000 baht a month.

It seems clear that, in my case, despite all the bitching I did about TOT, the problem lay with the computer all along. Maybe it's different in your case. I'm not knowledgeable enough about computers to advise anyone but in the light of my own experience I would suggest you think about getting your computer checked out.

Incidentally, Wattana only charged me a couple of hundred baht for their work - on top of the 1200 I paid for the new part. Money well spent.

Many times it pays to upgrade to a business package. Unfortunately due to the expensive international bandwidth in Thailand ISP's simply cannot offer the same speeds at the same prices as in the West.

On the business package your contention ratio is lower, so you share that precious international bandwidth between less subscribers.

Theoretically this means your international downloads should be closer to the speed you would get when downloading form sources within Thailand.

Practically, it looks like they don't completely master bandwidth management, so it's still a bit hit and miss, but the odds are a bit more in your favour :o

I use TT&T which has a similar price structure. They clearly indicate on their price sheet that the cheapest service is not suitable for VOIP. You'd have to upgrade to the more expensive service costing over 2,000 per month to have reliable VOIP. Your upload speed is very important when you use VOIP and usually the limiting factor.

When I need VOIP, I use my Cat HiNet 2Mb/1Mb connection which costs 2,700 per month.

As Monty indicated, it's how many people in your local area that share your bandwidth that determines your speed (and the price).

I am in Na Jomtien too (near Ambassador).Had the same problem (same speed as a 56k modem sometimes)

Changed my contract to 128/256 (the smallest ADSL from ToT)

And...It goes faster or same speed than with goldcyber

Enough from my usage.I don't download movies or songs

I had 512/256 in Jomtien and it was great. Speeds for the last 2 years around 400-420/230-260. I moved past Sukhumvit and now have 1024/512 which is worse though the speeds indicated are higher.

The speedtest on this site is a joke. Though the download can be as low as 420-450 it is usually around 700-900 but the upload speed is shown 9 from 10 times as 423. I'll just try it again now - down 860 up 423 !!!!!

Playing poker on Poker Room has me stalling, getting disconnected. Nothing changed with the PC, all down to TOT crap.

I went around, posted on the boards about what my options were but you basically have TOT at Bt700 or 1000 per month or you pay upwards of Bt2500 to silly money for more speed. Just not worth it in my case.

I just hope they will geet better as when I first had it in the condo in View Talay 2, I could get little better than 250-300/150-180. VOIP through SKYPE there was great. here it is variable.

I think I get high sometimes and then nothing, much more variable, just more crap.

This is to be expected as you are paying the bargain basement prices. Your connection is determined by the useage of other users in your area. Maybe 20 to 50 other users.

2 years ago you were getting higher speeds because the demand wasn't as high then. The demand is now much higher than supply and some people in certain areas cannot even get telephone lines without a very long wait.

You get what you pay for. Fast Internet in Thailand costs a lot more...that's life here. Most things are cheaper, but some things cost more.

my experience is completely different. i was on Maxnet Premier paying more than 4,000 Baht a month and got nothing but a sh*tty performance most of the time. then changed to Maxnet "el cheapo" Indy paying a quarter and my performance went UP. now i have as a second connection TOT cybergold @ 1,000 a month and i am (so far) very happy. have not cancelled Maxnet yet as TOT connection only since three weeks.

Hi, well 200 kps does NOT cut it at all....if I was on the 256 plan that is wha I should get......I am near where the old sharky reastraunt use to be, I was told my ADSL connection comes from the Amasador hotel. I called CAT no service hre yet....I am in Bangkok most of the time. so would hat to e pay much more then 1,500 or so.....I am not sure about TT&T in my area but NO CAT yet.....yes I stay in a house villisae about 20 or so houses here most I think are useing TOT DSL so that could be part of the issue, but I do get good speeds on the local website just NOT international. the service is getting worse and worse as I said before at first it was 700 or 800 allways then it went to 400, 300, and now 150 to 200 kps is it.....think I will have to cancel and just use EDGE not paying $1,000 THB for nothing!!!!

Sorry but you have got the wrong end of the stick. I had a great service on half the speed for all of the last 2 years then crap now on 1024/512 !

I do not accept I am paying "bargain basement prices" - circa 20-25% of a month's minimum wage ? Also, kindly explain why fast internet should cost more in Thailand when all the component costs must be far cheaper.

We are a internet company here at Naklua and the internet connection is vital for our business so we have all 3 providers..

TOT: The worst of them all. Terrible service, slow connection, lots of downtime.

TT&T: Is acceptable. Bad Service, Good connection, some downtime.

CAT: The best! Ok Service, fast connection, no downtime at all for the past 6 months!

It is you who has the "wrong end of the stick". You will not find a good fast service for 1,000 per month.

I run 2 services in my apartment:

1. CAT HiNet which costs 2,700 per month for high(er) bandwidth (2Mb/1Mb).

2. TT&T Maxnet for 1,000 per month. This is provided at 2550/512.

I've had both of these servivces for 16 months, and practically living on the Internet I've had a lot of experience with both. The first one is superior in every way. The second service I use for emergencies only.

I download something in the vicinity of 20 to 50 GB per week and let me tell you that the Maxnet 1,000 service is totally useless for bittorrent download and VOIP even though it's rated at 2550/512.

However, we're not comparing apples with apples here because TT&T Maxnet has higher bandwidth services for similar prices to CAT HiNet.

Before someone asks why my Maxnet is 2550Kb for 1,000 per month, it's a recent promotion where subscribers of over one year get free double speed. In actual fact it's worse now than before they gave me the double speed.

Why does fast Internet cost more in Thailand than back at home? Isn't it obvious?

In SE Asia it's still new technology. They don't have the demand yet, or competition to keep prices down and probably never will. Most of the costs in Thailand relate to setting up the Internet infrastructure.

Apart from that, the majority of Internet sites we access on a daily basis are hosted in Europe or the US. To get fast access to these sites we need a much higher bandwidth than we would need if we were actually in Europe or the US because we are all competing to access these sites through narrow pipelines.

well in Bangkok I use true SME package it is about 2,500 per moneth 2meg down and 512 up......it is ok, but not that goood.....dureing peak times my spead drops to 4 or 5 00 kps, not worth the 2,500 THB I pay...note this is in Bangkok with true...here in Pattaya I am not here much, maybe one week per month or so total so not worth it to pay 2,500 for something that does NOT work,....I am interested in trying CAT, but not in my area yet...I am near that new condo La Royal, close to where sharky used to be......so far as I know it is only TOT

Hardly. I have lived in Singapore and Malaysia. Both have excellent internet technology at less than half the price of Thailand.

Thaksin tried to sell TOT to Singapore. It's a shame the deal didn't go through.

I apologize. Let's keep the terms more specific.

Substitute "SE Asia" with Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Laos.

Singapore is not a 3rd world country, and in fact it's only a city. I'll bet that fast internet in Malaysia is expensive.

Not at all. I got excellent service from Maxis.com for MYR 88/month. That's about 880 Baht. There is more competition in Malaysia, more infrastructure, and less corruption.

There's your answer.

The latest stats I've seen put the Internet penetration of Malaysia at 47.8% and Thailand at 12.5%.

Malaysia is even ahead of the average for Europe (40%).

:o so why did you bet it would be expensive there

Because I've seen many threads on a Malaysian Expat forum covering the subject (in Penang) which indicated it can be expensive, especially securing a telephone line.

currently I have download speed 920 kbps to a BKK server and smaller 80kbps to any foreign server

If demand is relative to speed and vice versa with the same infrastructure, then the lower demand you quote in SE Asia (and lets be more specific here in saying Thailand), would need less infrastructure to attain the same speed - no ?

I think we can establish that Singapore, Korea, Japan and perhaps Malaysia have the ability to access these sites in Europe or America faster than perhaps Europe or America itself. Therefore we should only need to think about getting the data from one of these regional centres - no ?

I am sure there are technical issues and inefficiencies here in Thailand but that in itself does not explain why speeds are so slow and reliability is an issue.

Are you saying that the problem between Thailand and the rest of the world because the "pipelines" are too small ? Which pipelines exactly ?

Think logically. If the demand is low for Internet access then the infrastructure (and setup) for less people will cost a lot more.

You too can have reasonable speed in Thailand. My CAT HiNet 2Mb/1Mb connection usually gets speeds on US servers (Speakeasy)of 1600-1800 download, and upload averaging around 700 - 800. You'll have to fork out around 2,700 baht per month and it works through a dedicated line (no telephone).

I've been using this service for 16 months and don't have too many problems with it. I download bittorrents averaging 100 - 200 kb/s. It's ok.

One time after a storm my line was down so I called them and they were out to my place in less than an hour.

If you want to spend less, you won't get the same consistency in speed.

For example, my TT&T Maxnet is rated at 2550/512 and costs 1000 per month and I can't even watch YouTube with it unless you're very patient. With my CAT HiNet, YouTube doesn't miss a beat.

In Pattaya and probably all over Thailand it depends where you live. I have TT&T Max Net 512/228 and I get 430 most of the time for 790 Baht per month. I can watch streaming video etc. TOT sucks. I use to have them and it doesn't work. Old equipment. Cat is the best, but unless you need it for a business, or like a friend of mine, their was no other option, the value for the money is not their.

It depends on how much you value your time. Spending an additional 1,600 per month is very well worth it if you value your time enough not to sit around waiting for stuff to download, not to mention the dozens of good movies and other stuff I constantly download....money very well spent.
