Public car drivers required to show IDs

BANGKOK: -- Drivers of public vehicles in Thailand are, from now on, required to always show their identity cards (IDs) to passengers.

The requirement is stated in a new Transport Ministry regulation, which was endorsed by the cabinet at its weekly meeting here on Tuesday, according to the Deputy Transport Minister, Mr. Nikorn Jamnong.

The regulation will take effect over the next days after it is announced in the Royal Gazette.

"Under the new regulation, drivers of all public vehicles, including taxis, business service cars, and tour and passenger buses, are required to have their ID cards framed and put in front of and behid their seats so that passengers can see their names clearly", Mr. Nikorn told journalists after the cabinet meeting.

"The ID cards are required to be in both Thai and English languages in case that some foreign passengers may also want to lodge any complaints against any drivers", he disclosed.

The measure is aimed at enhancing passengers' safety, and courtesy among public vehicle drivers.

"The move is also aimed at promoting the country's tourism industry, and boosting Thailand's good image as a safe tourist haven in the international community", said the deputy transport minister.

Well that should help ease the queues at the bus stops.

Good business opportunity, selling snacks while they wait to see the driver's id. :o

Said nothing about showing to each person,,""Under the new regulation, drivers of all public vehicles, including taxis, business service cars, and tour and passenger buses, are required to have their ID cards framed and put in front of and behid their seats so that passengers can see their names clearly", Mr. Nikorn told journalists after the cabinet meeting.""

And I think it is a very good idea, has been so in most countrys for years.

I have wished it were so in more times than one, I did make a complaint to a bus company and TAT about a bus driver and had to use the bus number, company name and route and date because the name of the driver was unknown.

I have never in mylong life been on such a terror trip, will never ride the bus from CM to Lom Sak again, and even makes me wonder if I should hire a van to take us to BKK for my visa renewal. But the VIPs seem to have better drivers and there is better roads to BKK than there is north.
