Thai Made Sausages And Bologna

Normally buy sausages and ham/bologna from Bangkok Ham company. Yesterday picked up bologna of BKP brand and it totally feels like its made out of flour and pink colouring.

Even the CPF brand is similar. Bologna at 210baht a kilo, a total rip off. which ones do you buy?

I usually buy TGM, I find their small goods quite acceptable. Lately I've been buying S&P as well, my Thai wife is quite partial to the cheese and bacon sausages.

I find both brands readily available at Big C and have also seen them at Tops.

I can't comment on bologna, I don't eat it but it sounds expensive for a product that is usually mostly cereal anyway.

saw a food seller pushing her cart today with an array of sausages - some were purple, other bright red and other yello .... makes one wonder .. its a bit like Be Lucky's fire red hot dog's -

There is no cereal in Bologna, but milk powder and they must have a cheap saurce for the stuff

A quick search of the internet revealed the presence of neither cereal or milk powder.

This was the most interesting site.

The only constant factor in recipes for Bologna sausage in old cookbooks is the name.

Hmmm sorry to rain on your parade, but of course, milk powder does not belong into Bologna nor do 15% of rusk into british sausages - but that's what you get from a lot of suppliers and not only here, but in Europe too- that is where I saw the niche in the market here and moved in with quality product - but as said, I stay away from Bologna because of the oversaturation of the market

Your not raining on my parade John, this is what's called a friendly discussion regarding sausage recipes. I'm quite happy to be shown to be wrong, but maybe you'd like to reply to the OP with your opinion on smallgoods brands made in Thailand.

As I mentioned in my post, the problem does not only apply to Thailand but to Europe and the US as well. The main reason is, that people want to buy products as cheap as possible - see Bologna at 210 Baht - a rip off - to make a decent Bologna to traditional formulations at top quality and sell it through Supermarkets at THB 210.00 / KG would be impossible and here is why

The Supermarket takes on average 30% which in this case makes 63.00 baht leaving 147.00 THB

Pork has recently gone up in price to some 72.0 baht / KG buying in large volume - add spices and other ingredients - now take into account other costs to the producer like electricity - labour - taxes - costs for certification - rent - deprechiation of machinery (they are expesive and don't last forever) and one big factor, having to remove goods that have passt their sell-by date and destroy them -

This is the reason wy we stay out of the "Bologna" business - rule number one always applies: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR AND THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH OR IN THIS CASE CHEAP BUT GREAT BOLOGNA

when there is more flour and colouring in it compared to pork, THB210 a kg is a rip off as it is with BKP and CPF stuff which are supposed to be "good" brands to buy. on the other hand, i'd gladly pay for Bangkok Ham's bologna at 210 a kilo.

You are right there is no free lunch or in the case cheap but great bologna.
