Picked this up at Lotus, 35B for 1kg, claims to be 89% raw chicken carcass. It looks fine, not much different than some of the mince in the market.

Mixed with some vegies and rice, it's quite economical (much more than cans) and very convenient for ppl who don't have time to chop up all the raw food. Dogs like it.

Has anyone else come across this stuff?

Dont think there will be anything wrong with it, and if you dogs like it then there you go: I buy chicken carcasses sometimes in Makro and cook them up for my GSD with rice and All in one feed, this is also from Makro Value bag of all in one biscuit. Some buy bones as well then cook them up that's if the wife does not think there is too much meat on them first for a soup or something for the family :o

Had some guys working at ours recently and he saw my dogs meal apparently he said to the wife that looks better than my meal :D

Some buy bones as well then cook them up ...

I don't want to hijack this thread, but since we are talking about dog food, there have been many in the Pets Section on TV that have warned about cooking bones and giving them to dogs. I used to do this, but am now afraid to. It has been said that bones splinter easier when cooked. Any thoughts on this?

Absolutely true, OMR, and this includes cooked carcasses, whether they are whole or grinded. A vet in the States with three emergency clinics, told me that from all cases of perforation of the digestive system 90% were caused by cooked bones.

When giving a raw fed diet to pups it is recommended that it consist of approx. 75% raw meaty bones, for adult dogs this is approx. 60%. Raw meaty bones (RMB's) consist of approx. 50% meat and 50% bones. Carcas is primarily bones. It will, among others things, unbalance the calcium-phosphorus ration and can cause constipation.

Whole carcasses at the local market are about 20 to 25 baht per kilo (in CM), so Lotus is pretty expensive (IMO).

Normally I don't chop up the RMB's in tiny pieces, but just in the chinks each dog needs, i.e. 500 grams for my 2 GSD males and 350 gram for the GSD female, 300 gram for a male Thai dog and 150 grams for 2 female thai dogs. The Saint Bernard is on diet and gets 400 gram. All these dogs are fed twice a day.

Dogs that eat cooked meals will get only the meat, never the bones, not even grinded. Way too dangerous. In these cases it is much better to give bone meal (pills) and uncooked egg shells that have been blended.

Thanks for the responses. The stuff isn't cooked and while the ingredients say chicken carcass, it seems to be mainly fatty meat, looking at it, I would be inclined to say it's much less than 50% bones. So maybe it isn't so expensive?

While the price may be higher than carcass, it's very convenient, especially for those who don't have blenders and I think it's much better value than the cans.

On the subject of raw food, I've read here that fish can be bad for worms. Is cooking them for little while the go? What about the organs, are they more dangerous for worms?

The thing with buying those packages is that you don't really know what it contains. Usually it is the left-overs such as fat (many of he chickens raised in big factories have a lot of fat), tissue, carcass and maybe intestines as that isn't sold at the markets. I doesn't contain much real meat, if at all.

I doubt if it has nutritionally more value than canned food, I think more in the direction that it is different, IF you give only those packs. If you give it in combination with real meat, organ meat, etc in the right ratio's, than maybe it is ok. Although, still I'm suspicious about the amount of fat in there.

As it goes for raw fish: I'd rather don't give fresh water fish, but sea fish in stead. My dogs won't eat it raw, so for them it's canned or cooked (without the bones). Best it to give head and organs as well. Problem with canned fish is that it contains MSG.

Good blenders you can buy at any supermarket/store. VERY important item to have: yoghurt, vanilla ice-cream and mango. Blend-blend-blend and slurp. YUMMIE!!!!!!! :o

I was in Tesco last week and happen to look at the DR Dog, and another brand of frozen dog food, the price varies from 19 baht (on offer) to 58 baht, on the dearer brand it gives the ingredients in English, and the meat content was only 4%, so what do you think the meat content of the cheap brand is. I then bought fresh chicken for my two adopted Soi pups.

:o I am certainly glad I put the cheap brand back in the freezer.

...looks like I'll have to get a blender

Blenders are usefull for the daily use in the household anyway. Feeding animals is getting closer to "Rocket Science" man one could study books forever or visit seminars. I for my part do high quality dryfood, rice and beef or lamb stew. I have been feeding this for many years and its all been good, no kidney failure no liver probs and they are just loving it and are healthy it doesn't matter what breed.

This is my contribution to the subject..

For the last few months I've been feeding my lab with cooked meat and bones (rice added). Now I will stop cooking the bones and give them to him raw. I thought only chicken bones were a danger.

Regarding cheap dog food, ages ago I used to buy the cheap tinned meat from Tesco and Carrefour. I stopped after one can had cling film mixed in with the meat.

Also, I've found a diet of real meat is far cheaper than taking the pedigree (brand) route.

My dog loves the Dr,. Dog and related brands, altho not as a steady diet (he doesn't like anything too many times in a row). Looking at it, it is clearly red meat, along with fat. Presumably also ground bone since made primarily of carcass.

My policy is to vary his diet, both because he likes that and because I figure it is the best insurance against possible nutritional lacks in the various dog foods available. (The canned brands don't seem to list nutritional contents in much detail).

If I were a meat eater I probably would go the raw meat and bone route but as it is I'm holding my vegetarian nose in buying and cooking "Dr. Dog".............

Are these the frozen slabs?

My dog won't touch those.

Tony, try battering then deep frying them straight out of the freezer. Could sell them on Soi Cowboy to drunken farangs at 2am for a profit.

This stuff gave my pooch the worst case of "farting" and smelly s**t I've smelt in my life. It stays in the freezer at Rim Ping super market now!!!
