Hi All

I think I’m getting the hang of this Torrent downloading thingy. Unfortunately the last few downloads have resulted in files that nothing I have will play.

These are files like DvDscr.XViD-FINAL or DvDRiP.xVid or TS xVid. Non of these files will play. I have tried them on Windows Media player, Super@, Video LAN and several others. I also have the CODEC pack and numerous other programs that have been collected over time and I should be able to play just about anything. :D

The thing is that with these unplayable files there always comes an extra file telling me that if I should have trouble playing these files :o to download their recommended players and if that does not work there is always this other player that can be purchased (from them) guaranteed to play this file. :D

Now all this makes me a little skeptical, as some time ago I downloaded what I thought was a kids feature cartoon only to find out that it was hard core porn. Now I have nothing against porn hard soft or inbetween but after spending several days downloading (I was on dial-up then) it p****d me of a little. :D

Also the player I had to download came with a whole lot of unwanted stuff that took some time to clean out, on top of which to have a movie that can only be played on the computer is a bit limiting.

I did follow this latest link through to see if I could play the latest downloads and as it looked like a “professional” site decided to take the chance and download their free players “3wPlayer and DivoCodec”. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately Avira caught a Virus called “DR/obfuscate.Ed.EN.445” and I stopped the download.

A Google for the virus brought up hits only from Avira but nothing to say how to deal with it. Just to be clear I did not get the virus as Avira caught it being downloaded.

So we come to the point have I missed something and are these files playable without infecting the computer with a lot of junk? Also is there a way of identifying files that will play normally without wasting recourses downloading them? I thought I was being careful enough checking the file types but obviously not. :D

Thanks in anticipation!

Definitely do not install 3wPlayer or you will be spending a lot of time cleaning up the mess. :o

VLC player, (which you can download by torrent) will play almost any one of the various esoteric file formats, on your computer anyway.

If you don't now what file type is it you can easly check with google Search like this: file extension .xvid!

But you should alhough read the descriptions on the tracker where you download from!

"Reimer"

I can see what the file types are just dont know which are "good"

Calibanjr”

Xvid is a codec. Would have thought VLC would have played it. I use Media Player Classic myself.

PS You may want to change your list to just highlight the extension, rather than the content since I feel a forum rule galloping towards you.

PPS Tywais have to admit the software's title you suggest made me smile. {Below}

You are downloading fake files for sure if it asks for or suggests that you need 3wPlayer. It is a well known scam on Torrent websites.

before you downoad a torrent, especially recent releases, check in the box that says "announce" and if you see the name "Denis Stalker" then you know that is is a fake.

VLC has built in codecs and should play just about any video file, even High definition .MKV files. If you want to Media Player classic (what i prefer), you should get the Klite codec pack.

If you cannot play them is it possible you have a corrupted file, rar files that need to be extracted or joined??

Also, if the title says TS anywhere it means it was filmed with a camcorder in a cinema. Almost all new releases are TS until a copyable DVD is released. Avoid like the plague!

“Tywais”

The GSpot is a neat little tool unfortunately it can’t help with my files “unknown file type”

“youngkiwi”

I don’t think the files are compressed they are round about 6/700MB which is about the same as for normal movie that does work. I have several compression programs that will handle RAR files but non of them want to know.

“just another farang”

Thanks for the tip will look for Mr Denis Stalker in future and hopefully save my self some agro.

I did find some more info apparently the only thing that will play these files is the DivoCodec but a Google on this shows it to be a virus.

Je*us H Ch**st don’t some people have anything better to do. :o

Am still interested to find if there is any way to play these files so ideas still welcome

Thank y’all

there is no way you can watch movies generated by denis stalker unless you are willing to pay, its a scam so dont do it. Some people have paid and found that the movie is not the one advertised but by then its too late. Most of us who use torrents regularly have downloaded one of those movies often because it is the latest movie released and the only other versions available are cam quality which 90 per cent of the time are unenjoyable to watch.

Delete them and put it down to experience

Have been doing some research and it seems that the 3wPlayer is a widespread problem, though very little info on getting rid of it.

It also appears that the files I have that can only be played with the 3wPlayer are in fact proper movies. Some are porn but apparently there is the chance that it is a proper movie but not the one on the title, a bit like lucky dip.

It seems these rouge movies have some encryption at the beginning so if you can get rid of this encryption the movie will play like normal. There is the hard way to remove the encryption:-

http://tinyurl.com/2b7dck

Or a program to do it the easy way:-

http://tinyurl.com/yo92dg

I’m not an expert, novice is more like it, but some of the more knowledgeable might be able to say if these programs work or would using them only lead to more grief?

The easy way, just drag and drop would be for me anything more involved would be too complicated for me.

The above links are only to web pages so no fear of opening.

Read the comments when you go to the tracker sites. Most times, somebody will have downloaded one of these files that requires special (most likely 3WPlayer) software, and they will leave a comment warning other people to avoid it.

As far as a good player that will handle DivX, Xvid and most other video types, I like KMPlayer. It's free and full of nice features. VLC is also good, but Windows Media Player is the worst. (Gee, a Microsoft product being the worst of the lot, imagine that.)

One other word of warning is to avoid any movies that are one big (700+ MB) RAR file. These are often bogus and after decompressing it (using Winrar), you will be asked for a password. There are usually instructions in a text file telling you to get the password from a certain site, but when you get there you'll probably find an ad for 3WPlayer or some other crap like that. However, movies that are chopped up in several (likely 14 MB) RAR files are often fine.

VLC media player basically will play anything I download. You mention - DvDscr.XViD-FINAL or DvDRiP.xVid or TS xVid, but these are just descriptions, eg dvdrip - it's ripped from a dvd. VLC will always play these for me, unless it's a fake, but this is unusual. As said before, it's the file extensions that you want to look at. right click on the file check out it's properties, if it's .avi then it should work fine. If you install vlc player (or something similar) and use it as your default player then the file itself, would become a small icon, meaning the player will recognise it (it's a small cone for vlc). Do you have winrar installed on your computer, cause if so then you will see the winrar icon on the file, meaning it needs to be unpacked. Also, check out the comments section of the torrent itself before d/loading if they are all positive then you know the file is ok.

Do a search for axxo on a site, he always uploads good stuff, and it just comes as a straight .avi, see if a film works just as a test.

So you got fake stolen goods .Delete them and chalk it up to experience.

There are plenty of fake torrents out there. Some torrent sites weed them out but it takes time, usually about a day. Demonoid's internal trackers are completely safe, for example.

Isohunt has forums where people report bad torrents, others run comments but they might be misleading - same people who upload fakes can write up comments, too.

There are some signs to spot fakes - one big .rar file (small, 14MB rars are ok, they are from Usenet) is a dead giveaway. .avi extension won't tell you much, btw. It could be just a still image loaded with crap to make it look like a full movie. It could be a trailer expanded to 700 mb.

General rule is not to download ANYTHING way ahead of a general release. There are no dvdrips while the movie is still in theaters. It doesn't work that way. Period.

Having numerous Media Players along with their own codec packs, as well as other codec downloads, can be a recipe for some conflicts when you want to play a particular file.

And frustrating when none of them seem to satisfy the need.

I installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack full version. Which looks at all the codecs that you have - and suggests which ones are in conflict - and uninstalls them - prior to giving you a clean install of what you need in the way of codec / player / tools. Included is a media player - "Media Player Classic" - which plays everything.

It is this player that I allow to be the default player for all movies and dvds.

K-Lite Codec Pack has been discussed elsewhere on TV - and is a "package" of the codecs you need, together with a player and other software.

K-Lite Codec Pack Full version 3.45 has a download file size of 14.3Mb

There is another version of K-Lite Codec Pack with has even more features than the 'lite' version.

It is known as K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Full version 3.45 and has a download size of 17.9Mb

All versions are available as a free download from CODECGUIDE

Not that any of that will assist you with the file you ended up with. Just a suggestion.

Actually lots of face axxo torrents are around, too. The rule is the same - he is never the first one to release a blockbuster movie, certainly not two weeks before everyone else. Recently he's been concentrating on ripping crap - B movies that don't make it to the theaters.

Download axxo only when everyone else released a movie already.

Are you implying that it will also play it? Because that's not true. You can rename any text file and call it 'xxx.vlc' and it will be represented by the VLC 'cone' icon.

Ditto, .mp3, .doc, .avi - whatever the default player is, you see the corresponding icon.

Best to use "gspot". :o

Yes, his releases are excellent.

But he's got a bit annoyed with a web site listing all his torrents. Maybe he wished he'd done it first and is now going to lose out on potential advertising revenue?

Most crap is on .avi. So, what if you don't want to view your media on .avi format on the PC, how do you convert them to DivX so you can burn them and view them on the TV ?

[sorry stupid question..]

I generally just keep looking/waiting for another torrent! :D

But there is ConvertXtoDVD - a program that does just what it says on the box! But it is amazing just how big the DVD files are - a 700 Mb .avi turns into a 4 Gb set of files for burning on the DVD. :o

And it's slow - several hours on my 2 year old PC, but sometimes worth it.

If you just want to watch the files on tv, there's loads of dvd players that will play .avi files, even the cheap ones. I bought one for 1500 baht just to play files i d/load. It has a usb port too so you can save on disc use.

The fact is George that .avi continues to be popular among file-sharing communities. Even though many consider it an outdated format.

As long as you have the correct codec and a suitable media player - it isnt a problem to play any movie type on your PC.

The .avi file is a "container", that can contain 14 or more output video codecs. DivX can be one of them.

Using GSpot Codec Info tool - you will find what codec is inside your file.

You dont usually find a file that has a .divx extension. The files are exactly the same as those with the avi extension, with the only difference being that they have substantially worse compatibility (many applications that can play and import DivX encoded avis do not work with files that have the divx extension).

But getting so many formats onto DVD can be a hassle. Especially if you have your preferred way to burn them to DVD.

If you want to have your .avi files with the DivX codec - then convert your file using SUPER © - by eRightSoft. It is a free conversion tool.

Getting an .avi file ready for burning as a DVD is very easy using a converter like WinAVI DVD Converter.

Because WinAVI is so reliable and easy - I now prefer to have .avi files with the DivX codec, as the starting point.

Wrong. I watched "The Bourne Ultimatum" a while ago - a "DVD Screener". :ohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screener

Errrr... Screener is not a DVDrip. DVDrip is a copy of a real DVD sold in stores. Most movies manage to keep their screeners away from the public, if you find one, it will be all over the internet in two days, about the same time it takes for sites to clear up fakes, so if you are not sure, just be patient.

Once the official DVD is out there are dozens of "releases" under dozens of names, different formats, different file sizes, diffent resolution. You can put one up yourself.

Screeners usually have only one source and few people bother to copy the downloaded file and release it under a new name. File names in that case usually keep references to the original and add some information about this particular copy.

>>>

Avi. format is here to stay, at least until High Definition downloading takes over. 99% of divX movies are put inside avi. "container".

Heh, heh! I knew you'd say that! :D But a torrent with "DVDScr" in its name is a "DVD rip" of a "DVD Screener". I guess the space between 'dvd' and 'rip' makes all the difference :D

But my point was, you don't always have to wait until a film hits the theatres to find a good quality rip available - I was impatient to wait for the theatre release of 'Bourne Ultimatum' and found the Screener.
