Help With Torrent File Types?

Featured Replies

Read the comments when you go to the tracker sites. Most times, somebody will have downloaded one of these files that requires special (most likely 3WPlayer) software, and they will leave a comment warning other people to avoid it.

As far as a good player that will handle DivX, Xvid and most other video types, I like KMPlayer. It's free and full of nice features. VLC is also good, but Windows Media Player is the worst. (Gee, a Microsoft product being the worst of the lot, imagine that.)

One other word of warning is to avoid any movies that are one big (700+ MB) RAR file. These are often bogus and after decompressing it (using Winrar), you will be asked for a password. There are usually instructions in a text file telling you to get the password from a certain site, but when you get there you'll probably find an ad for 3WPlayer or some other crap like that. However, movies that are chopped up in several (likely 14 MB) RAR files are often fine.

I agree. I tend to stay away from the RAR files as most of them require a password to open. Once opened, you'll find it's a fake and full of ads. I use utorrent as my client and DVDFlick, NERO, and DVDShrink to convert the files once downloaded using utorrent. I find the DVDFlick will convert most other formatted files to DVD format without any problem. (Although, it takes its time doing so. 1:45 min) I use DVDShrink when I want to burn in a hurry and NERO when I want to make menus. You can also do the menu bit with DVDFlick. There's all kind of other great software out there but, I find that these three programs are very user friendly. One last bit of information.....Don't forget to delete the files from the destination folders once you have burned them. Otherwise, you will find that you have used up large amounts of hard-drive space and your computer will slow to a crawl......Good Luck.

I don’t think the files are compressed they are round about 6/700MB which is about the same as for normal movie that does work. I have several compression programs that will handle RAR files but non of them want to know.

I did find some more info apparently the only thing that will play these files is the DivoCodec but a Google on this shows it to be a virus.

delete them they are fakes. the time you spend trying to open them you could have downloaded real ones again.

Thanks “t.s” for reminding me of an old topic. Kinda funny to read back my early days of Torrent use.

Have learnt a lot since then mostly from the contributors of this forum and now know to only download playable stuff and also where to find the good stuff.

Amazing what there is available out there I have to keep buying ever larger capacity hard drives to store it all. :o

Thanks to all for the information to get me on the right road.

“Jui-Jitsu” As it happens I do play most of my files with WMP using the FFDShows. Don’t know what people have against WMP I like it.

:D
